Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: November 9, 1922 President Grant said it was a source of great satisfaction to him to see such a large attendance. He said he had no recollection of any opening of conference on a week day when some of those attending had to stand. He was grateful to see so many present, hoped all would be fed on the bread of life, and that whatever he said would be for the good of himself and the congregation. When the Opening prayer was made, he said, and a supplication went up to God that law and order might be upheld, he knew what the keynote should be. President Grant then read a selection from the Doctrine and Covenants to the effect that laws and rulers should be upheld and order maintained. That, he said, meant that men should be able to labor without running the risk of being killed by someone who objects to their doing such work. The President said he was convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is the duty of every Latter-day Saint to obey the law, to uphold the law and sustain the law. It is the duty of every man and woman in the Church to uphold the laws. This includes the prohibition law and the cigarette law. President Grant said that only those men who will agree to support the cigarette law and keep it on the statute books should be supported by the Latter-day Saints. The founder of this Church met the Father and the Son face to face, and his followers have been proclaiming that fact to the world since, said the President. He then read an account of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum; how the Prophet declared he was going like a lamb to the slaughter. The speaker said his mother had told him that a more God-fearing man than Hyrum Smith never lived. He declared he believes that Joseph and Hyrum are working on the other side for the advancement of the plan of salvation as they worked here, and that they have attained the highest degree of exaltation. Men can conspire and can work against the Church of God as established upon the earth, the speaker said, but no one can find a man since Jesus Christ who has done more for the salvation of mankind than Joseph Smith. Hundreds of thousands of persons, he said, have a testimony of the truth of this fact, and all the lies in the world cannot stop this work. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: January 11, 1934 It is obvious that these changed conditions should have little, if any, effect upon the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its members have always stood for temper ance, they still stand for temperance, and should unitedly use their influence for the enactment of rational laws which will hold the liquor traffic in proper restraint, that we may never return to the golden age of the bootlegger, or the intolerable conditions which preceded him. Without reserve we endorse the attitude of the President of the United States when he says: To take the life of a person without due process of law is murder. It has always been, and still continues to be a fundamental doctrine of the Church that: The murderer has not eternal life abiding in him. Notwithstanding the vexatious delays of the law, the 11n certainty of the verdict to be pronounced by judge or jury, by which violators of the law who are obviously guilty are too frequently acquitted and turned loose 011 the community, to again kill, kidnap, or rob, we admonish members of the Church to refrain from participation in acts of lawlessness, and to advise others to refrain from all association with mobs. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 73: February 9, 1911 Redeemer, His Son Jesus Christ. So there is but one plan of redemption and salvation for the human family. That being so, in the justice of God, who is the very embodiment of that eternal principle, all His children must, at some time and in some place, become acquainted with that gospel, learn what it is and have the opportunity of receiving it and obeying it, or of rejecting it if they will - for the principle of free agency 'is an eternal and abiding principle. It exists in all intelligent beings, the sons and the daughters of the great God who has given them that privilege to choose light or darkness, truth or error, good or evil, to take which course they prefer. Although there are, of course, many influences surrounding them, either for good or for evil, to which they may yield themselves, and to which they may become subject, yet in them, inherent, God-given, God-planted, is the principle of free agency, the power to receive or to reject the truth; to live accord ing to light, or to walk in darkness. So, at some period in the history of all the sons and daughters of Adam's race, there must come a time when they can hear that which God wants them to do, and take their choice. Whether they be in the body or out of the body, they are the same persons; people are not changed, simply because they shuffle of this mortal coil. They are the same persons as they were before they came into the body, and will be the same when they pass out of the body. Every indi vidual soul Will preserve its own identity, worlds without end. So, I say, there is a grand and glorious work to be performed, and I do not expect to cease my exertions and labors when the time comes for me to depart hence. I shall go, I presume, as I have done ever since I have been in the Church, where I am sent, and try to do the work allotted to me, and to do it with my might, to put my powers and energies into it, and to perform such duties as are incumbent upon me to the extent of my abilities. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: March 9, 1905 Those who so teach, teach blasphemy. They would seal the lips of the Eternal One and rob Him of all power of direct and immediate communication with man they ignore the Living God as a factor in current events, and in their hearts have dethroned the Supreme Ruler. Bow ghastly are the linea ments of this belief with the damp odor of the grave; it is as hideous as are the petrified saurian monsters of the Reptilian Age. It has no place in the progressive, living liberality of this day, and never has it held a rightful place in the honest thought and sound belief of men; for it is as it ever has been, as it must ever be, illogical, unnatural, untrue. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: November 9, 1916 After the spirit leaves the body, it remains without a tabernacle in the spirit world until the Lord, by His law which He has or dained, brings to pass the resurrection of the dead: ten the angel who holds the keys of the resurrection shall sound his trumpet, then the peculiar fundamental particles that organized our bodies here, if we do honor to them, though they be deposited in the depths of the sea. And though one particle is in the north. Another in the south. Another in the east, and another in the west, will be brought together in the twinkling of an eye, and our spirits will take possession of them. \ve shall then be prepared to dwell with the Father and the Son, and we never can be pre pared to dwell with them until then. Spirits, when they leave their bodies, do not dwell with the Father and the Son, but live in the spirit world, where there are places prepared for them. Those who do honor to their tabernacles, who love and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, must put off this mortality, or they cannot put on immortality. This body must be changed, else it cannot be prepared to dwell in the glory of the Father. To me all these things are plain and easy. All we want is to understand the very subject Jesus was talking about, the nature of our organizations, the world we occupy, the laws by which we are, and by which we continue to exist. Brother Hyde says, Take the world, and what do they know pertaining to the things of God? Do they know their right hands from their left, figuratively speaking? No. All that Brother Hyde has said concerning our important position is true. It is beyond the power of man to fully unfold it, though a portion has been beautifully portrayed, and it seems that the people should see things that are so plain. \vere it possible for the nations to gain power to destroy this kingdom 011 the earth, by so doing they would seal their eternal damnation. That is as true as it is that Jesus died for the sins of the world; as true as it is that there is a heaven, a God, and that the world exists, and the children of men dwell upon it.
