Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: January 11, 1934 It is obvious that these changed conditions should have little, if any, effect upon the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its members have always stood for temper ance, they still stand for temperance, and should unitedly use their influence for the enactment of rational laws which will hold the liquor traffic in proper restraint, that we may never return to the golden age of the bootlegger, or the intolerable conditions which preceded him. Without reserve we endorse the attitude of the President of the United States when he says: To take the life of a person without due process of law is murder. It has always been, and still continues to be a fundamental doctrine of the Church that: The murderer has not eternal life abiding in him. Notwithstanding the vexatious delays of the law, the 11n certainty of the verdict to be pronounced by judge or jury, by which violators of the law who are obviously guilty are too frequently acquitted and turned loose 011 the community, to again kill, kidnap, or rob, we admonish members of the Church to refrain from participation in acts of lawlessness, and to advise others to refrain from all association with mobs. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: November 9, 1933 Precedent, a century old, that found its beginning in a revela tion from God to the Prophet Joseph Smith at the organization of the Church, has made conferences an established institution in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The great general semi-annual gatherings, and the mission and district gatherings as well, are as mileposts in the glorious journey of Church achievement and growth in this dispensation. Believers gather to receive instruction from their leaders, to renew old friendships, to refresh their loyalty, to enlarge their under standing, to grow in the faith - and to thrill to the strength of fellowship that permeates the assembled saints, united by the same fraternal bond. Indeed, the secret of the great internal strength of the Church lies, in part, in the great unifying power of such gatherings. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: December 21, 1933 No man can return to the Father except through the Son, for the name of Jesus Christ is the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men. He has manifested Himself in person to His prophets in the present dispensation, and has spoken with them as one man speaks with another. He is known to be in the likeness of the Eternal Father - the express image of the Father's person - for both have been seen and heard in this the dispensation of consummation and fulness. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: November 8, 1923 Elder Melvin J. Ballard, the next speaker, said he had asked himself what was the primary purpose of the Lord in revealing the existence of the Book of Mormon. He had thought of the great comfort contained therein for believers, and then he had thought of the more definite word of the Lord. He read from the Doctrine and Covenants wherein the Loni gives the purpose explicitly, to the effect that the descendants of Lehi in the last dispensation shall know their heritage and the blessings that shall he theirs. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 Disaster has come to many members of the Church, he said. Because they failed to heed the counsel to stay out of debt. Some have lost their homes by reason of debt, and have been obliged to move to other climes; and this in some instances has resulted and might yet result in their drifting away from the Church. He said he can find no financial adviser who is willing to predict safety beyond the very near future, and to-day is as good a time as ever to heed the ad vice. It occurs to him that one debt the Latter-day Saints owe is their debt to the Lord, and he admonished the saints to be prompt and fair in the payment of their tithes in the season thereof. The next Speaker called was President Charles A. Callis of the Southern States mission. It is good to live to-day, he said. There have always been those who garnish the sepulchres of the dead prophets, the speaker pointed out, but he believes that if a man is disloyal to the Church leaders to-day he would have been disloyal to the Prophet Joseph Smith if a man is disloyal to the government of the United States to-day he would have been disloyal to George Washington and the other patriots of his day. He told of a conversation he had had with a learned man who said that if the world had been told ten years ago that the great world war was coming it would have laughed the informer to scorn and then would have crucified him. Elder Callis said he told the man that in effect the world did crucify such a man, for the Prophet Joseph Smith foretold the great Civil war and died a martyr to his convictions. It is the call of Latter-day Saints to cry repentance to the world and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of whom Latter-day Saints are not ashamed.
