Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: December 29, 1910 The certain sound of revelation through Christ the Head has taught us the character and attributes of God, and the anointing we have received of Him abideth in us, and we need not that any man teach us. (i. John 2: We, as Latter-day Saints, should praise the Lord all our days for the light and knowledge which we have received with respect to the personality of God, our Father, and Jesus Christ, His Son. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: December 22, 1910 It seems needless to multiply texts in support of the necessity of good works, but the clearest, perhaps, to the purpose is the description by our Lord of the great and terrible day of judgment, the day which will assign their destinies to every man and woman. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 25, 1910 Those of us who have been baptised by those holding the authority of this Priesthood are indeed born again out of the water and of the Spirit, and inasmuch as we abide in the truth then are we joint heirs with Jesus Christ. As a child I knew the prophet, Joseph Smith. I was as familiar with him and in his home as I was with my own father and in my father's home. What I remember of him is that he was a good man, a man who loved the poor, a man who had a heart like a woman's in sympathy for all the afflicted. He was a good father to his children and he was a prophet of God. N ow I know this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 17, 1910 The Book of Mormon and all the good that it has brought to thousands upon thousands of our race, all the joy that it has poured into the hearts of multitudes, all the light that it has caused to shine into the understanding of hosts - all this, and more, must count for useless experience and material trash. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: June 16, 1910 Jesus Christ - for the personage who spoke was none other than our Savior - stated that he must join none of them for they are all wrong, that their creeds are an abomination in my sight, they draw near to me with their lips but their hearts are far from me. They teach for doctrine the commandments of men, having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 31, 1910 The splendid organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it exists to-day, is one of the fruits of the system, or doctrine, and it cannot be said with any degree of reason that the good conduct of a comparatively few men engaged in missionary work abroad, while the great body of the people were living horrible lives at home, could bring about such admirable results. The missionaries constitute but a single branch of the great tree of Mormonism, and if it is healthy and vigor ous and shows good fruits, then the trunk and the roots must of necessity be healthy and vigorous. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. The presence of these well-behaved men in the missionary field is a matter worthy of more than passing thought, when we consider the fruits of the tree of Mormonism. They come from all avocations direct into the work without preparation, in the ordinary sense, as ministers, but they are almost immediately able to discuss the principles of life and salvation readily and intelli gently, overwhelming the clergy by their wide understanding of the Holy Scriptures. They come from the cities, the farms, and in many cases from regions that may be termed frontiers, yet their behavior is such that even ministers of the gospel, who are unfriendly to the system, acknowledge their excellence. This is all the result of Mormonism. Their ability to meet the learned in the discussion of religion, to behave circumspectly and with propriety in all lands, they owe to the enlightening and refining influence of their faith. Of themselves they are weak, just as the apostles of the Lord were in olden times, but having been nourished from this tree of spiritual and intellectual life, they burst forth into able teachers of men. Could results like this come from a bad source? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 11, 1910 Now to the Latter-day Saints: You have put your hand to the plough of the gospel. It would be destruction to you to turn back. If Mormonism, so-called, is true, then you cannot desert Mormonism without deserting the truth, and yet some men will deny the faith and depart from the Church, because they become offended at the conduct or the acts of one of their brethren. No matter what other people do, yet I say as one of old said, As for me and my house, we will serve God. Let each individual mem ber of the Church feel in his soul that he has found the great prize, and that he will not yield it up, that he will not trample it under his feet, but that he will treasure it in his soul, and will re tain it though all others in the world depart from it. It is the truth that will make us free, and upon the foundation of truth we must build our hopes and our expectations of salvation in the kingdom of God. Remember this, that no church can rise above the truth. N 0 man, no teacher, no instructor of men, can ever be come a law unto himself and build himself up above the truth. On the truth we must stand firm and steadfast. One of old, I think it was Pilate, asked the Lord, What is truth? Christ did not immediately answer the question, but He answered it at another time, and this was the answer that He gave to the question: Saith the Lord, my word is truth. If God has spoken, He has spoken the truth. If He has sent His servants who teach His word, then His servants teach the truth, and the Lord Almighty is bound to sustain His word, which is truth, and also to sustain every individual soul who has established his hopes upon the word of the Lord. Now permit me to say just a few words more with reference to this. What is truth? God is truth, and Christ is truth, and the plan of life and salvation instituted by the Father in the beginning is truth, and this truth permeates every doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. N ow, the question arises in the hearts of many people, Is the mission of Joseph Smith true? We come to the world to declare to you that his mission is divine, and from my point of View and the point of view taken by every faithful elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, if the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith be not divine, then the mission and the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ will fall in the same way. This is our testimony to the children of men, and this testimony bears to you, our friends, a message of peace and reconciliation to God. We believe in every doctrine taught by the Son of God, and our belief in these principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ are not of any avail to us except we do more than simply believe in them. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: December 15, 1910 But the name Abraham does appear in tablets of the age of Hammurabi. (see Professor George Barton in Journal of Biblical Literature, Vol. 28, 1909, page It is true that this evidently is not the Abraham of the Bible, but that of a small farmer who had rented land of a well-to-do land owner. The preservation of his name is due to the fact that the most of the tablets preserved contain contracts relating to the business of the times. There is little reason to expect that we should find a definite reference to the Abraham who in early life migrated from his native land. But it is of a good deal of significance that his name appears to have been a common one in the time and place of his nativity. In considering the arguments in the case, it is important to keep in mind that where so few facts are known, and general ignorance is so great, negative evidence is of small account, while every scrap of positive evidence has great weight. The burden of proof in such cases falls upon those who dispute the positive evidence. For example, in the article above referred to, Professor Barton argues that it is not quite certain that Arioch (eri-agu) was a real Babylonian king. But he admits that our ignorance is such that we must admit its possibility. Dr. Barton further argues that we have as yet no evidence from the inscriptions that Arad Sin, even if he were called iri-agu, ever had anything to do with Hammurabi. But, he adds, Of course, it is possible that he may have had, as their reigns must have overlapped, but that remains to be proved. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: February 10, 1910 My God hath been my support; he hath led me through mine afflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep. He hath filled me with his love, even unto the consuming of my flesh. He hath confounded mine enemies, unto the causing of them to quake before me. Behold, he hath heard my cry by day, and he hath given me knowledge by visions in the night time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
