Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 2, 1909 These historical references are but a few among the many that might be cited to show how intimately the Almighty associated the history of His chosen people with that of the mighty nations of ancient Egypt, Babylon, Persia and Greece - not doing His work in a corner, but so disposing events that the mighty and powerful peoples of the world in ages past have become agents for the dissemination of a knowledge of the true God, or at least torch-bearers that led the way to the repository of Divine truth. Willingly or unwillingly they did it, and in many noteworthy instances their wickedness was overruled for the advancement of the cause of truth, and the justification of God's dealings with our race. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 9, 1909 The signs of the times point to a future rejection of many of the present teachings of Christendom. In the great conflict between science and the religion or theology of the world, where do we find enrolled the scientific minds? With science, every time, and in a position which is deadly antagonistic to a theology, which, among the rest of its tenets, teaches the creation of new matter out of nothing. The inrush of knowledge and truth has proved its nu stability and it is but a matter of time until the people as a whole will recognize, as have the thinking and scientific minds, that the doctrine is indigestible and that the churches must disgorge it. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: September 2, 1909 It is not claimed, of course, that the Book of Mormon history and the developments of scientific research in the field of American antiquities are yet in agreement in every detail. Harmony _of this character is not to be expected either now or later, nor is it necessary that a universal harmony should be established before the inspiration of the Book of Mormon ought to be admitted. The existing agreement respecting quite a number of facts that no mortal knew in 1828 shows that Joseph Smith's knowledge of them was not derived from earthly sources, and hence must have been obtained just as he claims; and it follows that when there is a lack of complete harmony between the Book of Mormon account of certain matters and the statements of uninspired men, the latter are in error or fail to have full information in their possession. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: February 11, 1909 The Baptist had baptized a great many men before the Savior came to him, but on none of them had the promise of the Father been fulfilled. But when Jesus was baptized and had come out of the water, 10 the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. That hour John knew the Redeemer and he bore record that He was the Son of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: December 16, 1909 The self-made wise are often sincere, but sincerity sometimes blindfolds truth. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in'this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. (i. Cor. 3: 18, The Apostle Paul, or Saul as he was once called, was at one time with this class and knew whereof he wrote, but it was hard for him to kick against the pricks of conscience, and ere long he became the recipient of the Holy Ghost by the imposi tion of the hands of Ananias, and afterwards became an authorized ambassador for J csus Christ. The spiritually led are those who by prayer, humility, faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: October 28, 1909 There are things, in connection with this subject, that would not perhaps, be proper to speak of here, before a large and mixed con gregation: but I want to sound a warning to the Latter-day Saints. The time has come for them to look after their children. Every device possible to the understanding and ingenuity of cun ning men, is being used for the purpose of diverting our children from the faith of the gospel and from the love of the truth. Every species of organization is being formed, both in our midst and abroad, having for its object the express purpose of leading astray the children of the Latter-day Saints, because they can't reach their parents. This is their argument: We cannot convert the adult Mormon people, but we may, perhaps, convert their children; we may lead away their children; we do not hope to lead away the Old people. They can't do it, except it may be, now and then, a man or woman who never did know anything parti cularly about the gospel. These, only, are they who can be led away from the truth; and our children can be led away from their parents and from the faith of the gospel, only when they are in a condition that they know not the truth for themselves, not having been taught it, not having had a proper example before them to impress it upon their minds. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: May 6, 1909 The life of the Book of Mormon is thus seen to hang suspended, as it were, upon the use of a compromising word, a single reference with a distinct modern coloring only, or we might say, the careless slip of a pen. But blunders of this character (so easily made in a spurious work simulating the character of the Book of Mormon) are not found in it. Multitudes of instances of the kind just noticed, and every one of them affording an' Opportunity for dis grace and ruin, swarm about the pathway of any man, unlearned or learned, who dares attempt the task of writing by his own power the history of an ancient people without having a scrap of their authentic history for a guide. Let us now imagine Joseph Smith, a young man, unlearned, un schooled, wholly untrained for writing a book of any kind, not to mention the unusual difficulties and dangers connected with a work like the Book of Mormon, attempting to compose the latter as a religious romance, or a purposed fraud. His knowledge of all ancient matters amounts practically to nothing. (how defiant it was for him to choose the field of which he knew the least for his operations 1) There are limits, or boundaries between the ancient and the modern which he cannot pass, and still retain for a moment the confidence of his fellow-men as an inspired translator of ancient records. We see him reach the line between safety on the one side and discredit and disgrace on the other. This line of separation is sometimes almost invisible, and as he reaches it the impetus of his progress seems sufficient to bear him onward to ruin as a word or two will do the work; but he pauses at the proper point, always pauses there, and some people try to explain his course, or account for his preservation, on one contradictory theory or another, ever failing to perceive that if Joseph Smith were such a man as his opponents claim, he would doubtless have plunged headlong into the first one of these pitfalls that lay hidden from him but so directly in his way. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: June 17, 1909 Moralists and students of human nature are agreed that most vices are close kindred. 'users of tobacco are often users of liquor and other stimulants. It would be a rare thing to find a user of tobacco Who is not a user of intoxicating drinks or some stimulating drug. Those who profane the name of Deity are in most cases lax in morals in other ways, so that we may safely conclude that all evil has a common source, the evil that destroys the mind as well as the evil that destroys the body.
