Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 16, 1908 In the southern part of Utah lived a poor widow and her son. The latter was a wild and reckless youth, frequently getting into trouble and causing his mother much sorrow. He was considered the terror of the town in which he lived. The bishop of the ward and his counselors met one evening to consider his case. They decided, provided the young man were agreeable, to send him to the Brigham Young College at Provo. They had two objects in this: first, to get rid of him, and second, to reform him. They offered to pay the expense of his tuition. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 9, 1908 He that receiveth you, receiveth me, ' said Jesus to His disciples 'and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.' Your friend will admit that the people who rejected the gospel taught by the Lord's divinely-commissioned apostles were just as much under condemnation as those who rejected it when preached by the Master Himself; he will also admit that those who received the gospel taught by the apostles received the same blessings from the Father as though they had received it from the lips of His only begotten Son; and when he admits these things, he must also admit that those who received baptism at the hands of the Lord's servants were just as acceptable to God as they would have been if baptized by His Son Jesus Christ. One day when Christ was teaching in the temple, the chief priests and the elders asked Him by what authority He taught the people. Turning to them He said: 'i also will ask you one thing The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or of. Men?' (matt. 21: 24 Now, had the Lord not considered baptism an essential ordinance, He would not have asked this question. It is only by admitting the essentiality of baptism that we can save our blessed Lord from the charge of having spoken foolishly on that occasion. Had baptism not been considered a saving ordinance of the gospel in the days of the Savior, these people could have turned to the Messiah and said, 'why ask us such a question? Baptism has nothing to do with our salvation, therefore it matters not to'us from whence it came, whether from heaven or of men.' Surely your friend must see that the chief priests and the elders are witnesses against him? Their silence testifies to the importance which the people attached to the ordin ance of baptism in the early days of Christianity. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: February 6, 1908 Let us see what the will of the Father was as revealed through Christ. In the first place it was and is the will of God that men believe in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and accept Him as their Savior and Redeemer. When certain people asked the Lord, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? His answer was, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (john 6: 28, This shows us the first step we have to take in order to become one with the Father - to believe in Christ whom He has sent, and in the great and infinite atonement which He has made for our Sins. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: August 8, 1907 I like this dreamer, Joseph. He was assailed and laughed at and sold finally into Slavery, but nothing could move him from obedience to present high duty or Shake him from an implicit trust in his God. What can thwart such a man? What can overcome him? Everywhere and always the man with such courage will carry the emblems of victory. It is so here, but in a far higher sense it will be so in the celestial kingdom. - rev. Benjamin young. IT will pay to listen to good advice. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 2, 1908 Faith is the first principle of true religion. Without faith it is impossible for a man to please God. The apostle extols this great principle in his writings, and uses several illustrations to Show how individuals obtained Divine favor because of their faith. He speaks of Abraham, who believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness. We can see the necessity of Paul laying so much stress on faith; he knew that if he did not, first of all, persuade those people to believe in Christ they would not obey the gospel of the Redeemer. But notice how differently he writes to those who believed in God, and who had accepted His Son as their Savior and Redeemer. In an epistle to Titus, he said: This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. (titus 3: This clearly shows that Paul was not opposed to good works. On the contrary, he applauds them and instructs Titus to teach the people constantly to perform them In this he was simply reiterating the words of the Messiah, who said to His disciples: Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: November 5, 1908 Another lesson we can learn from this item of history is: that just as the Nephite vessel did not make progress while her captain was bound, neither can we make progress in the Church of Christ if we tie ourselves up by cords of our own weaving. These are some of the bands by which, if we bind ourselves, we shall stay our progress and go back in the way of life and salvation. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: August 13, 1908 It is displeasing to the Lord that you should question the words of His servant. If you cannot rely upon my testimony concerning the truth of these things, you can go your way; I can get men who will believe me? N 0, he made no excuse whatever. He handed Martin Harris several sheets of paper containing a copy of some of the characters and their translation and the farmer left. N ow, those characters must have been either genuine or bogus. Had they been bogus is it reasonable to believe that Joseph Smith would have been so willing to expose them to the scrutiny of learned men? N o, indeed, he would have known that his fraud would have been instantly detected and himself exposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
