In 1862 he called D.Willard Bliss, Surgeon, United States Volunteers, from a Michigan regiment, to organize a system of general hospitals in and about Washington. Que result of his coming was the speedy erection of this one, on Government land, about the Armory, opposite the Smithsonian grounds. All of Dr. Bliss's far-seeing suggestions and ingenious, though simple, arrangements to aid in caring for the sick and wounded were discussed weekly with the President. I was quite interested in the venerable structure, etc., but returned very much fatigued, the walk being over two miles, and having partaken of a very light breakfast indulged myself in a refreshing sleep after dinner, finding myself sufficiently exhausted in body to be able to do so, though regretted to lose Dr. Sunderland's address, who was invited to assist in our religious services to-day. Wrote a letter to Sister Cornelia. Went to Ward I with Miss Platt, as the "Glee Club" were expected to sing, it being Miss Felton's last evening here, where we found Professor Henry and lady; but they sang only a short time, being invited to sing in the Baptist church by Mrs. Green, who assists us so often with her alto. At "Taps" we gathered in the parlor of our "Chateau" in honor of Miss Felton's departure. Partook of coffee, cake, etc., and made as much noise as ten ladies could conveniently without any tin pans or broomsticks. Valedictory speeches abounded, and having found that one had retired quietly, declining to be present, she was immediately brought before the appreciative...

As many as 20,000 women worked in Union and Confederate hospitals during America's bloodiest war. Black and white, and from various social classes, these women served as nurses, administrators, matrons, seamstresses, cooks, laundresses, and custodial workers. Jane E. Schultz provides the first full history of these female relief workers, showing how the domestic and military arenas merged in Civil War America, blurring the line between homefront and battlefront. Schultz uses government records, private manuscripts, and published sources by and about women hospital workers, some of whom are familiar--such as Dorothea Dix, Clara Barton, Louisa May Alcott, and Sojourner Truth--but most of whom are not well-known. Examining the lives and legacies of these women, Schultz considers who they were, how they became involved in wartime hospital work, how they adjusted to it, and how they challenged it. She demonstrates that class, race, and gender roles linked female workers with soldiers, both black and white, but became sites of conflict between the women and doctors and even among themselves. Schultz also explores the women's postwar lives--their professional and domestic choices, their pursuit of pensions, and their memorials to the war in published narratives. Surprisingly few parlayed their war experience into postwar medical work, and their extremely varied postwar experiences, Schultz argues, defy any simple narrative of pre-professionalism, triumphalism, or conciliation.

Florence Nightingale is famous as the “lady with the lamp” in the Crimean War, 1854—56.
