Excerpt from The Labor Question in Its Economic and Christian Aspects Hence it is one of those natural laws, which it is not in the power of-man, or combinations of men, to alter or abrogate, that labor is absolutely dependent on capital, in some amount at least, for its very possibility'and sustentation and in still larger and ever increasing ratios for its success and rewards. Capital is the natural ally, support, and coadjutor of labor. It can notbe otherw1se, except in distempered misconceptions, or through some strange and monstrous mal-adjustment. Excerpt from The Labor Question No sweeping statements can be justly made about existing relations between employers and employed. In many cases they are all that they ought to be. Among employers of labor there are tens of thousands of just-minded, honorable men and women who govern themselves in all their dealings with those who work for them by the Golden Rule; and among wage-workers there are hundreds of thousands of honest and faithful men and women who render cheerful and efficient service to those who employ them. Excerpt from The Battles of Labor: Being the William Levi Bull Lectures for the Year 1906 For many years it has been my earnest desire to found a Lectureship on Christian Sociology, meaning thereby the application of Christian principles to the Social, Industrial, and Economic problems of the time, in my Alma Mater, the Philadelphia Divinity School. My object in founding this Lectureship is to secure the free, frank, and full consideration of these subjects, with special reference to the Christian aspects of the question involved, which have heretofore, in my opinion, been too much neglected in such discussion. It would seem that the time is now ripe and the moment an auspicious one for the establishment of this Lectureship, at least tentatively. Excerpt from The Elements of Political Economy: With Some Applications to Questions of the Day With the assumption that Political Economy is inhuman and pitiless, the reader will find no sym pathy in these pages, because such a belief is founded on an inadequate understanding of what the principles of a science really are, and principles can not be regarded as having personal qualities. On the contrary, it seems clear that the funda mental principles of economics are, when ultimate ly analyzed, but expressions of Christian truth. With this conviction, the labor problem has been here treated, not as a question to be settled by legislation, but as one to be met by all the forces which make for Christian character and self mastery. Excerpt from The Path of Labor; Theme: Christianity and the World's Workers Those who labored with such desire and earnestness for the selection of a theme for the textbooks for 1918-1919, that should present not only a vital but a paramount issue to the church at this time when only great realities and issues claim serious thought, chose better than they knew when they elected Christianity and the World's Workers. It is generally conceded that the most decisive single factor in the world contest today is that of Labor. That there is always danger of over emphasis by any group having the power in the body politic is axiomatic. It becomes therefore even more important now than when the theme was suggested (nearly two years ago) for our church constituency to address itself to such a study of economic relationships as shall open the way for a more complete understanding of the fundamental rights and facts involved, that a basis of thinking may be attained whereby the mutual welfare of all society may be advanced along the line of a Christian democracy. "Christian" because the body of influence set in motion by Christ is the greatest spiritual force in the life of humanity, and upon it depends the world's hope for redemption from oppression, injustice and war. At the outset of our thinking on this theme we might profitably seek a definition of the term "Christianity," for this word which calls so inspiringly to millions of people carries a sinister reminder of pogroms and persecutions to millions of others. The Rev. Dr. Charles Jefferson of New York City, says: "Christianity is a large word, and it cannot be defined in a sentence for the reason that it is used in different meanings by different persons, and also by the same person on different occasions, and for different purposes. Excerpt from The Church and Labor When the writing of this book was first considered, it was a question as to whether the discussion should deal with methods of work or with the spirit of the Church and Labor. It was decided that the latter is of greater importance, hence this selection of the treatment of the subject. It is frankly acknowledged that better things might truthfully have been said about the Church and worse things about Labor, but there is already considerable literature telling about what the Church has done and what La bor has left undone, especially when the question is discussed from the viewpoint of the Church. Thisbook is written largely from the standpoint of Labor. An attempt is madent-o present the spirit which under lies the labor movement, and to show that.
