Excerpt from The Journal of Parasitology, 1918, Vol. 4: A Quarterly Devoted to Medical Zoology For many years I have been engaged in the study of parasitic worms from N orth' American freshwater hosts, mostly fish; during this time I have had opportunity to examine and compare material from a large number of localities embracing many widely separated points. In this work I have been aided very greatly by studies on individual groups undertaken and published under my direction by various graduate stu dents to whom my Obligation is freely expressed here. In connection with this work it has been necessary to examine critically all original records of parasites from similar hosts and to endeavor to reach a positive determination of the parasite under discussion in each case. This is not a Simple matter, as the records were Often made on the basis of a rapid preliminary examination; furthermore, the total lack of Special reference works on these groups led to the recording of parasitic species under general names taken from the older European writers, and these names are often wanting in definite significance. Excerpt from The Journal of Parasitology, 1915, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Devoted to Medical Zoology With the growing interest in pellagra, following the authoritative recognition of its presence in the United States in 1907, the study Of its etiology was taken up by various investigators and the several theories Of causation were subjected to close scrutiny. Prominent among these theories was that Of insect transmission, first advanced by Sambon, who limited this function to the Species Of blood-sucking gnats comprising the genus Simulium. Excerpt from The Journal of Parasitology, 1916, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Devoted to Medical Zoology Of more immediate interest are the cases of triradiate strobilae, in which the entire strobila instead Of being flat or ribbon like, as in the normal tapeworm, has a central ridge extending uniformly through out all the proglottids and giving a triradiate figure when seen in cross section. This anomaly may also be combined with the anomalies affect ing individual proglottids mentioned in the preceding paragraph. Twenty-eight such cases have been collected by Vigener (1903) and are summarized in the accompanying table. To this list I have added five more cases, one Of them not hitherto reported. Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1918, Vol. 24 No attempt to review or abstract from the literature the facts relating to dedifferentiation in metazoa will be made. This has been done in an excellent summary and review by Schultz Schultz formulated the observations on metazoa in terms of the hypothesis that all phenomena of form regulation are somehow related to and a result of the reversal of differentiation or de differentiation. In other words regeneration is a result of the differentiation of dedifferentiated cells (see also Child. Excerpt from The Zoologist, 1900, Vol. 4: A Monthly Journal of Natural History Of the contributors to our first number probably J. W. Douglas is now the only survivor. The aims and scope of the publication are precisely the same as in 1843 - bionomic primarily. In philosophy there is great change, but no new creed. It is undoubtedly the case that a naturalist may exist without being an evolutionist it is equally true that evolutionists can be found who are neither Lamarckians nor Darwinists and it is certain that Darwinists are to be found in plenty who are quite outside the school of neo-darwinism, and who have no desire to risk wrecking a great conception on speculative side issues. Hence the zoologist' welcomes all phases of thought, but stipulates for facts rather than theories, argument more than advocacy. All contributors may at least speculate on what our Journal may be made for the cause of Zoology during the next century. The summing up will then be in other hands. Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 27: 1918-1919 While the sex ratios for the inbred litters of the eighth to the twenty-fifth generations varied considerably, the variation was much less after the twelfth generation than before (table A part of this variation was doubtless phenotypic, Since seasonal changes in temperature seem to alter the sex ratio in the rat (king and Stotsenburg, and probably also other agencies, such as the age of the mother (king, '16 a), have a similar effect. As all of the sex ratios were relatively high, however, the devia tions from the norm cannot be ascribed either to environment or to chance, so they must have been due, in part at least, to the manner in which the breeding animals were selected. Unprecedented initiative in the world, the book compiles the available knowledge on the subject and presents the state-of-the-art in paleoparasitology – term coined about 30 years ago by Brazilian Fiocruz researcher Luiz Fernando Ferreira, pioneer in this science which is concerned with the study of parasites in the past. Multidisciplinary by essence, paleoparasitology gathers contributions from social scientists, biologists, historians, archaeologists, pharmacists, doctors and many other professionals, either in biomedical or humanities fields. With varied applications such as in evolutionary or migration studies, their results often depend on the association between laboratory findings and cultural remains. The book is divided into four parts - Parasites, Hosts, and Human Environment; Parasites Remains Preserved in Various Materials and Techniques in Microscopy and Molecular Diagnostics; Parasite Findings in Archeological Remains: a paleographic view; and Special Studies and Perspectives. Signed by authors from various countries such as Argentina, USA, Germany and France, the book has chapters devoted to the discoveries of paleoparasitology on all continents.
