Whether such a cleavage is brought about by the action of iodin alone, or merely as a result of acidifying the iodized product, cannot be stated at present. Of course it is quite possible that acid reprecipitation of iodo-mucoid mixtures, such as those at hand in these experiments, may result merely in mechanical separation of the products under consideration.
