Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review, Vol. 7 There are four initial assumptions underlying the problem of divine attributes in mediaeval philosophy. The starting-point of the problem is the rationalistic attempt to invest the Scriptural predications of God with the validity oflogical judgements. Then, alogical judgement is defined, after Aristotle, as having a double content, synthesizing as it does two distinct terms, of which one must be a universal. Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review, 1894, Vol. 7 On the 3oth of March, 1859, Perles received the degree of Doctor from the Breslau University, having passed the Examination summa cum laude, a. Rare distinction. He dedicated his Dissertation to his most-beloved Teachers preceptoribus dilectissimis), G. H. Bernstein and Zacharias Frankel. This Dissertation for the Doctorate was, as it seldom happens with such attempts, truly epoch-making. Within somewhat narrow limits it contained a fulness of most interesting matter and many new points of view. His subject was in the main nothing less than that the old Syriac Translation of the Bible, though it had been preserved by the Christian Church alone, was yet a product of Judaism, and, like the other ancient Jewish Trans lations of the Bible, reflected the J swish exegesis of the Bible as well as Jewish traditions. This view has, it is true, been combated, and with good reason partly narrowed down; but it advanced to a considerable degree the know ledge of the Peschito, and for the first time brought to light its historical setting. I may just refer in passing to the two theses which Perles appended to his doctor-dissertation, in order, as was the custom at the time, to defend his views in public - subj ects germane to the comparative researches of the author and which have not yet received adequate con sideration: Traditionum outs in re divine calent, similis apud Arabes atque spud Judmos est ratio and Cabbalistarum doctrine cum Ssufiorum arcte coheret. Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review, Vol. 19: April, 1907 As, then, this name appears in the colony of Syene and Elephantine as one of the commonest personal names, it seems reasonable to suggest that this colony, at least in part, consisted of descendants of people belonging to the Ten Tribes. Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review, Vol. 3: 1912-1913 The western worl - the world of modern civilization - has always felt and evinced a transcendent interest in the polity of the anciei. Hebrews. The books in which it is recorded were once universally accepted as literally inspired, and although the modern course of thought has tended to raise important dissents from this view, it is still widely accepted, and even those who reject it have contributed some of the most valuable aids to the under standing of the biblical literature. Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review, Vol. 4: 1913 1914 Neo-platonism was the final outcome of Hellenistic philosophy, and it represents in thought the fusion of peoples which characterized the cosmopolitan Graeco Roman society. Its most distinguished exponent was Plotinus, a Hellenist Egyptian who taught in the third century c.e., but it flourished for 200 years after his time; and it was from this system that in the early Middle Ages philosophical thought made a fresh start among the Arabs. Jewish thinkers thus played an important part in the revival of metaphysics, and found in the last stage of Greek speculation ideas sympathetic to their religious outlook. It is instructive therefore to trace the Jewish elements which were contained in the original amalgam, and more especially to consider the influence on it of the one considerable Jewish Philosopher of the ancient world. Excerpt from The Jewish Quarterly Review, Vol. 12 But if it is true that the Hebrew text is the original, it is equally true that very many lines have come down to us in a terribly corrupt state. From the number of duplicate lines contained in the Museum fragments 1, and also in some parts of the Cambridge publication, the present writer would conclude that readings from different recensions have been embodied in the Cairo text. The theory according to which these doublets represent translations from the Greek and Syriac respectively, is much weakened by the fact that the expected agreement between the Hebrew and one or other of the versions is often absent in these cases.
