Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Madagascar, Vol. 1: An Historical and Descriptive Account of the Island and Its Former Dependencies In the historical sketch which prefaces the first volume, and in the narrative of the franco-malagasy war with which the second portion of the work concludes, the compiler has preferred to place the events before the student in the accurate chronological order of their occurrence. The story, thus plainly set forth, aims merely at recording hard and often uninteresting matters of fact, without the slightest attempt at literary embel lishment. The incidents are related as nearly as possible in the words of the original accounts from which they are taken, and the authority for every statement is carefully given, so that the sources of information can be traced and the amount of reliance to be placed thereon judged by the reader. This severely chronological arrangement of the historical chapters, although necessarily inelegant, will, it is hoped, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying bibliographical references, materially assist the politicians, economists, and future his torians in tracing the development, the progress, and the onward drift of Madagascar and the Malagasy.
