Roche tells his story in the style of a war correspondent" -- Irish Times. Not illustrated. 1856 edition. Excerpt: ... THE INVASION OF IRELAND THE ANGLO-NORMANS. CHAPTER I. WHO THE IRISH WERE. When the first Norman invaders looked out eagerly from their galleys at the south-eastern coast of Ireland, which they were approaching, they beheld the shores low and the country generally level. Ireland, which on her three Atlantic sides rears lofty cliffs against the fury of the ocean, and lifts between it and her great central plain a further broad barrier of mountains or hills, is tame on herLeinster coast, where the districts are with one exception flat, and the margin of the sea only a strand. Leinster appeared to the over sanguine gaze of the followers of Fitz-Stephen, to kneel to England and invite B country, viz. the Fir-Bolg, the Tuatha-Danaan, and the Milesian, the first named must have been Celts, since we have abundant proof that they continued to form the bulk of the population after the arrival of the other two races. They may have come hither from Gaul or Britain, or even Spain, in which country the Celts had early pushed the aboriginal Iberians from some of the northern provinces. From all those countries Ireland was easily accessible even in that remote age. The date of the Fir-Bolg arrival is entirely conjectural, for it is lost in the haze of antiquity; but it may have been some twelve or fourteen centuries before Christ. They were conquered by the Tuatha-Danaan, a race whose civilization excited so much wonder in the people they subdued, that the traditions speak of them as wizards. The story of their arrival, and the description of their leader, display to us at once their skill in arts unknown to a primitive state of society, and the astonishment which such created among the rude aborigines. They approached the shores in a mist raised by...

"Christopher Klein's fresh telling of this story is an important landmark in both Irish and American history." —James M. McPherson Just over a year after Robert E. Lee relinquished his sword, a band of Union and Confederate veterans dusted off their guns. But these former foes had no intention of reigniting the Civil War. Instead, they fought side by side to undertake one of the most fantastical missions in military history: to seize the British province of Canada and to hold it hostage until the independence of Ireland was secured. By the time that these invasions--known collectively as the Fenian raids--began in 1866, Ireland had been Britain's unwilling colony for seven hundred years. Thousands of Civil War veterans who had fled to the United States rather than perish in the wake of the Great Hunger still considered themselves Irishmen first, Americans second. With the tacit support of the U.S. government and inspired by a previous generation of successful American revolutionaries, the group that carried out a series of five attacks on Canada--the Fenian Brotherhood--established a state in exile, planned prison breaks, weathered infighting, stockpiled weapons, and assassinated enemies. Defiantly, this motley group, including a one-armed war hero, an English spy infiltrating rebel forces, and a radical who staged his own funeral, managed to seize a piece of Canada--if only for three days. When the Irish Invaded Canada is the untold tale of a band of fiercely patriotic Irish Americans and their chapter in Ireland's centuries-long fight for independence. Inspiring, lively, and often undeniably comic, this is a story of fighting for what's right in the face of impossible odds.

Acknowledgments In the making of this book I have had the advice and assistance of many people, and I cannot regard the work as complete until I have expressed to them, in some fashion, my deep sense of gratitude. High on the list must be the name of Miss Emma B. Richardson, of the staff of The Charleston Museum, for her excellent work in preparing the manuscript, editing, reading proof, and in general making the book ready for the press. Her patience has been unfailing her quick grasp of every problem, me and accurate. It is, I fear, impossible for me to make adequate acknowledgment of all those who have assisted me in searching out extant examples of early Charleston furniture of space preclude a complete h g . I am particularly grateful, however, to those who have permitted me to come into their homes, often to the disruption of their households, to make photographs of their furniture. I was invariably received with courtesy, and in not a siigle instance was I refused permission to take pictures. I regret that I cannot show my appreciation of such generous co-operation by including in this book all the photographs I was permitted to acquire. The final choice has been determined by cost and space limitations, or by the necessity of avoiding repetition of the types of funitwe represented. It should be understood, therefore, that the exclusion of any given photograph does not mean that the subject was unworthy of inclusion. It should be understwd also that only by the collection and mdy of hundreds of photographs have I been able to write with confidence on the styles and types of early Charleston furniture hence, every photograph I have taken has been invaluable to me, whether or not it ocnus as an illustration in the book. Insdtutions and societies as well as individuals have been generous either in supplying me with photographs or in permitting me to have the photographs taken.........
