Excerpt from The International Policy of the Great Powers The outward tendency of civilization has always manifestly been westward; and while those peoples more strictly called Eastern, because there more permanently situated, have rapidly arrived at a certain degree of eminence, and then become stationary or retrograde, the nations of the West, though dating their olvili zation later in life, have always shown - at least during the historic period - a more elastic and-progressive career. Excerpt from British Foreign Policy Since the World War It is inconceivable that a modern war which was of more than four years duration and which involved all the great nations and many of the lesser nations of the world should leave a powbility, in spite of the efforts of conservatives and reactionaries, of restor ing just as it was the old order of society, economics and politics. Many forces that are too weak to demand consideration before a war are given by an upheaval such as the world experienced from 1914 to 1918, a power that can not be disregarded. Old social and political forces may be deflected from their former courses, or trans formed, or even strengthened, by war. It is to be expected, there fore, that a post-war period should be marked by a conflict between the old, which was not entirely destroyed, and the new, which rises to proclaim the failure of the mien regime and to challenge the supremacy of the old order. A study of the aims, the ideals and the methods which determined the conduct of the foreign policy of one of the world's Great Powers during the first decade following the World War serves to confirm this statement. Excerpt from An Introduction to World Politics AT the beginning of the World War I wrote a book about the relations among the great powers during the years immediately preceding the assassination at Serajevo. The New Map of Europe dealt particularly with Near Eastern problems and wars and with the foreign policies of Russia, austria-hungary, Germany, and Italy in the events affect ing the Balkan States, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and the countries on the. African littoral of the Mediterranean. The purpose of the book was to attempt to explain how the relations among the great powers were vitally influenced by the conflict of interests that arose in their diplomatic and economic activities in the regions formerly under the exclusive domination of the Ottoman sultans. The recep tion accorded The New Map of Europe encouraged me to complete the survey of contemporary international rela tions by writing The New Map of Africa in 1916 and The New Map of Asia in 1919. The latter two volumes outlined the development of European overlordship in Africa and Asia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
