Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1893, Vol. 14: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science Fifty years ago the symptoms of inflammation apparently coin cided with what could be seen with comparatively low powers of the microscope. The web-membrane of the frog was fastened upon a piece of cork, hollowed out. A drop of caustic ammonia was applied, or it was touched with a red-hot glass rod, and the result of' the irritation was observed mainly, if not exclusively, in the vascular system of the web-membrane. The current of the blood, which was seen to be normal before the irritation, soon afterwards became irregular and slackened, then oscillating to and fro, and at last arrived at a complete standstill, - the so-called stasis. Most of the pathologists agreed that by the irritation a rapid contraction of the vessels was produced, soon terminating in a paralysis of the walls of the blood-vessels, which latter did not offer any resistance to the pressure of the blood-current. At the same time an inundation of' the tissues of the web-membrane with a liquid had occurred, often mixed with extravasated blood, and after twenty-four hours a num ber of granular corpuscles were seen suspended in the liguid, which was termed exudate. These corpuscles or cells were thought to have originated in the exudate itself, and were named exudate cells. The process of inflammation was evidently a disturbance in the blood and the blood-vessels, and, since all diseases at that time were attributed to a certain mixture or crasis of the blood, the pathologists holding these views were called humoral patholo gists, with whom all diseases were due to a faulty mixture of the blood, - so-called dyscrasia. Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1900, Vol. 21: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science Mr. F. J. Bennett, l.d.s. (eng), in a paper entitled The Ending and Mending of Caries, suggests that the old maxim, which ays, What can't be ended must be mended, represents the point of view from which a large majority of dentists regard the subject of dental caries. They cannot end the advent of caries, therefore they devote all their energies to mending its destructive effects. He further suggests that the success in mending has tended to lessen the desire to end, or, rather, in the sense in which he uses this word, to prevent that which makes mending necessary. Had there been less resource in the mending; had the case admitted of no half-measures; had the dangers of caries been more deadly, more widespread attention and an unremitting efl'ort to the discovery of a prevention and ending of caries would have been made. He re viewed the efl'orts made to discover the cause of caries which have led up to the present accepted theories, and, reasoning from the suc cess attending preventative measures in lessening other germ-caused diseases, urged that there was in this suficient encouragement to stimulate effort to find some practical means of lessening if not end ing the necessity of mending dental caries.' Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1898, Vol. 19: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science I will briefly give you a report of two selected cases illustrating the line of treatment which I have indicated. About three years ago a lady called upon me for treatment, who, in the pursuance of her profession, is required to travel from city to city during the greater part of each year, thus requiring and receiving attention from several dentists. She reported that the first inferior molar on the right side had for a long while been the source of much annoy ance. It had been treated by numerous dentists, would apparently return to the normal condition, but with every cold she con tracted the alveolar inflammation would return. I inspected the tooth in question, and found in it a large amalgam filling; while on the border of the maxilla immediately below, and Opposite the anterior root, was an inflammatory bunch, such as we have all seen, which seemed quite dense, and sore to pressure. I removed the filling from the tooth, and from the roots took a quantity of cotton, having a composite Odor, in which I could detect that of creosote. I enlarged the canals slightly by means of the Gates Glidden drills, irrigated them thoroughly with peroxide of hydrogen and warm water, then introduced on a few fibres of asbestos a dressing of oil of cinnamon, closing the cavity with gutta-percha. The patient was visiting my office nearly every day for the week following, having a partial bridge denture inserted, which gave me an opportunity to watch the swelling disappear and the tis sues return to a normal color and condition. At the close of her stay in this city she called, as I had requested, to have the tooth filled. I removed the dressing, dried the canals thoroughly with warm air, and closed the apical ends with a small point of gutta percha; then filled the roots with oxychloride Of zinc, and closed the crown cavity with an alloy filling and dismissed the case. N ow we have the most interesting and important part of the matter. After an absence of two years the patient again called upon me for services, and reported that this tooth had not given her a moment's uneasiness during her absence, and had been quite as useful as any other of the similar organs.
