The Inner Line is the third installment of a trilogy that follows the adventures of Tim Best, former Vietnam War Vet and intelligence operative. The first book (Never Recovered) detailed his experiences to locate missing WWII gold in the Himalayas, and the second one involved his investigations into the murder and intrigues surrounding Buddhist icon smuggling and the kidnapping of reincarnated monks. This last book involves Tim Best and his partner attempting to block a dirty bomb terrorist action in Lhasa, Tibet. All three books were inspired by true events.

The Committee on Public Information, the major American propaganda agency during World War I, attracted a wide range of reform-oriented men and women who tried to generate enthusiasm for Wilson's international and domestic ideals. Vaughn shows that the CPI encouraged an imperial presidency, urged limits on free speech and called for an almost mystical attachment to the nation, but it also tried to present dispassionately the causes of American intervention in the war. This anthology testifies to women`s many concerns, whether witht a way of life, or with being caught inside the fur walls of the home, or in a relationship with someone other than the husband, or being caught at the intersection of many forces within a situation of political violence and armed conflict. In one way or another the woman`s body becomes a site upon which many battles take place; for control, for power, for progeny, but there is seldom a resolution in which the women remains a mere victim, or more acted upon than acting. Whether she is in the palaces of the gods, or caught in the body of snake, or speaking through the spirit of the countrside which witnessed her rape, the woman`s voice is unique, singular and in each story, different. While this gives substance to the cliche that India is a countr where many and varied realities exist simultaneously, it gives the lie to the cliche that all women speak with a sameness and a commonality of experiences.

Blending history, oral history, autobiography, and travel narrative, Bland Simpson explores the islands that lie in the sounds, rivers, and swamps of North Carolina's inner coast. In each of the fifteen chapters in the book, Simpson covers a single island or group of islands, many of which, were it not for the buffering Outer Banks, would be lost to the ebbs and flows of the Atlantic. Instead they are home to unique plant and animal species and well-established hardwood forests, and many retain vestiges of an earlier human history.

All over the world and throughout millennia, states have attempted to subjugate, control and dominate non-state populations and to end their wars. This book compares such processes of pacification leading to the end of tribal warfare in seven societies from all over the world between the 19th and 21st centuries. It shows that pacification cannot be understood solely as a unilateral imposition of state control but needs to be approached as the result of specific interactions between state actors and non-state local groups. Indigenous groups usually had options in deciding between accepting and resisting state control. State actors often had to make concessions or form alliances with indigenous groups in order to pursue their goals. Incentives given to local groups sometimes played a more important role in ending warfare than repression. In this way, indigenous groups, in interaction with state actors, strongly shaped the character of the process of pacification. This volume’s comparison finds that pacification is more successful and more durable where state actors mainly focus on selective incentives for local groups to renounce warfare, offer protection, and only as a last resort use moderate repression, combined with the quick establishment of effective institutions for peaceful conflict settlement.
