Download The Influence of Honing on the Wear of Ceramic Coated Piston Rings and Cylinder Liners Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Reciprocating wear tests were performed to investigate the effects of honing on the wear of ceramic coated piston rings and cylinder liners. The baseline or control cases consisted of testing ceramic coated rings against ceramic coated liner specimens whose surfaces were ground and lapped smooth. A second series of tests were performed with liner specimens with base and plateau honed surfaces. Test conditions were chosen to simulate the temperatures, pressures, and boundary lubricated conditions present at top ring reversal in a conventional diesel engine. Wear factor comparisons between the baseline cases and the tests with the honed liner specimens indicate that honing alone is not sufficient to ensure an improvement in ring and liner wear.

Download Test Method to Evaluate Cylinder Liner-Piston Ring Coatings for Advanced Heat Engines Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A tribological test method has been developed to assess candidate high temperature piston ring and cylinder liner coatings for advanced heavy duty diesel engines. A reciprocating test rig is employed to reproduce the boundary lubricated conditions existing at the piston ring-cylinder liner interface during top ring reversal (TRR). The test specimens are fabricated from commercially available piston rings and cylinder liners to facilitate direct comparisons with current diesel engines. A data acquisition system is used to collect coefficient of friction values. Coating performance is based upon calculated volumetric wear factors of the ring and liner as well as the friction coefficient. Baseline tests were conducted with chrome coated piston rings sliding on pearlitic gray cast iron cylinder liners while in the presence of a fully formulated engine oil. Friction measurements exhibited excellent repeatability throughout the entire test with average values ranging from 0.079 to 0.082. The mean of the ring and liner wear factors was 7.28 x 10 to the minus 10th power mm 3/N̂m and 2.62xl0 to the minus 8th power mm3/N̂m, respectfully and are in good agreement with values reported in the literature. These results indicate that the test method is capable of reproducing TRR conditions at the ring-liner interface of a diesel engine.

Download Automotive Engine Metrology Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In recent decades, metrology—an accurate and precise technology of high quality for automotive engines—has garnered a great deal of scientific interest due to its unique advanced soft engineering techniques in design and diagnostics. Used in a variety of scientific applications, these techniques are now widely regarded as safer, more efficient, and more effective than traditional ones. This book compiles and details the cutting-edge research in science and engineering from the Egyptian Metrology Institute (National Institute for Standards) that is revolutionizing advanced dimensional techniques through the development of coordinate and surface metrology.

Download Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Since its first appearance in 1950, Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines has served seagoing engineers, students of the Certificates of Competency examinations and the marine engineering industry throughout the world. Each new edition has noted the changes in engine design and the influence of new technology and economic needs on the marine diesel engine. This eighth edition retains the directness of approach and attention to essential detail that characterized its predecessors. There are new chapters on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation. Important developments such as the latest diesel-electric LNG carriers that will soon be in operation. After experience as a seagoing engineer with the British India Steam Navigation Company, Doug Woodyard held editorial positions with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Marine Engineers. He subsequently edited The Motor Ship journal for eight years before becoming a freelance editor specializing in shipping, shipbuilding and marine engineering. He is currently technical editor of Seatrade, a contributing editor to Speed at Sea, Shipping World and Shipbuilder and a technical press consultant to Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine. * Designed to reflect the recent changes to SQA/Marine and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency exams. Careful organisation of the new edition enables readers to access the information they require* Brand new chapters focus on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation* High quality, clearly labelled illustrations and figures

Download Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Several ceramic parts have already proven their suitability for serial application in automobile engines in very impressive ways, especially in Japan, the USA and in Germany. However, there is still a lack of economical quality assurance concepts. Recently, a new generation of ceramic components, for the use in energy, transportation and environment systems, has been developed. The efforts are more and more system oriented in this field. The only possibility to manage this complex issue in the future will be interdisciplinary cooperation. Chemists, physicists, material scientists, process engineers, mechanical engineers and engine manufacturers will have to cooperate in a more intensive way than ever before. The R&D activities are still concentrating on gas turbines and reciprocating engines, but also on brakes, bearings, fuel cells, batteries, filters, membranes, sensors and actuators as well as on shaping and cutting tools for low expense machining of ceramic components. This book summarizes the scientific papers of the 7th International Symposium "Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines". Some of the most fascinating new applications of ceramic meterials in energy, transportation and environment systems are presented. The proceedings shall lead to new ideas for interdisciplinary activities in the future.
