After a review of the deficiencies of the usual equations of motion for an oscillating ship, two new representations are given. One makes use of the impulse response function and depends only upon the system being linear. The response is given as a convolution integral over th past history of the exciting force with the impulse response funcion appearing as the kernel. The second representation is based upon a hydrodynamic study, and new forms for the equations of motion are exhibited. The equations resemble the usual equations, with the addition of convolution integrals over the past history of the velocity. However, the coefficients in these new equations are independent of frequency, as are the kernel functions in the convolution integrals. Both representations are quite general and apply to transient motions as well as periodic. The relations between the two representations are given. The treatment considers six degrees of freedom, with linear coupling between the various modes. (Author).

An investigation of the applicability of the Jacobi Function orthogonal polynomial representation of the impulse response function for the determination of ship motion from towing tank tests with irregular waves has been initiated. An analysis of the inverse Fourier transformability of the frequency domain gain and phase information obtained in lieu of time domain impulse response function is given with observations of areas of fallibility and recommendations on circumventive methods.

Download Wave Energy Potential, Behavior and Extraction Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Wave energy has a higher potential than most of the available ocean energy resources; however, it fluctuates dramatically depending on geographical and temporal baselines. The complexity of wave energy is only exacerbated by that fact that the cycle of creation, transport, and disappearance of wave energy is influenced by a wide variety of factors. This Special Issue of Energies explores the latest developments in wave energy potential, behavior, and extraction. This Special Issue introduces 1) thorough reviews on the status of wave energy development, 2) novel technologies to extract wave energy including wave energy converter design, and 3) latest methodologies applied in analyzing wave energy potentials.

Download Advances in Berthing and Mooring of Ships and Offshore Structures Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Two previous NATO Advanced Study Institutes (ASI) on berthing and mooring of ships have been held; the first in Lisboa, Portugal in 1965, and the second at Wallingford, England in 1973. These ASls have contributed significantly to the under standing and development of fenders and mooring, as have works by Oil Companies International Marine Forum (1978) and PIANC (1984). Developments in ship sizes and building of new specialized terminals at very exposed locations have necessitated further advances in the combined mooring and fendering technology. Exploration and exploitation of the continental shelves have also brought about new and challenging problems, developments and solutions. Offshore activities and developments have in fluenced and improved knowledge about both ships and other floating structures which are berthed and/or moored under various environmental conditions. The scope of this ASI was to present recent advances in berth ing and mooring of ships and mooring of floating offshore structures, focusing on models and tools available with a view towards safety and reduction of frequencies and consequences of accidents.
