The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare could substantially improve the doctor-patient relationship and reduce medical errors, inefficiencies and cost. However, there are many obstacles to AI implementation that prevent these potential benefits from materialising, which is why Dutch radiology departments are not even close to achieving wide scale adoption of AI. To reverse this situation, Dutch radiology departments should in the first place focus on implementing not just image interpretation AI tools, but AI tools along the entire radiology workflow. Further, they should cope via the radiological society of the Netherlands, the NVvR, with those challenges of AI implementation that can be best addressed via a focal point, on a national level. Dutch radiology departments should let their radiologists who are early adopters of AI share their knowledge on the potential of AI with the NVvR to get this organisation on board, as it is currently not embracing the topic of AI in radiology with conviction. Lastly, Dutch radiology departments should cope with certain challenges of AI implementation within the borders of the hospital, such as establishing an AI integration commission to cope with the high complexity of integrating AI tools.
