The production of polymer nanocomposites from solution consists of the mixing of the polymer and nanoparticle in solution and subsequent evaporation of the solvent. Here, we examine the formation of polyacrylonitrile and C60 fullerene nanocomposites, with a focus on monitoring these two steps. This study indicates that the nanoparticles are individually dispersed with the polymer chains in solution prior to deposition and in the final film. As the solution becomes more concentrated, the nanoparticles are sequestered to the outer edges of the polymer crystals, altering the detected crystal structure. The self-assembled structure of the crystalline polymer is directed by the addition of C60 and manifests itself as a peak in small-angle X-ray scattering on a length scale of ~150 . Moreover, our results suggest that the non-covalent molecular interactions between C60 and polyacrylonitrile matrix are sufficiently strong to alter the self-assembled morphology of the polymer and the meso- and nanoscale structures in the nanocomposite.

Polymer nanocomposites have garnered incredible promise in the field of material science due to the excellent mechanical strength, thermal and electrical conductivities of the nanoparticles and the extension of these properties to the processing flexibility inherent to plastics. However, practical realization of these nanoparticle-based materials has been hindered by the tendency of these nanoparticles to aggregate as a result of strong inter-particle forces. In this dissertation, we investigate the formation of non covalent charge transfer interactions between polymers and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with the goal of optimizing interfacial adhesion and homogeneity of nanocomposites without modifying the SWNT native surface. Nanocomposites of SWNTs and three sets of polymer matrices with varying composition of electron donating or electron accepting functional groups were prepared. In the first part of this dissertation, quantitative characterization by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy and qualitative results through thick film composite visualization show that the existence of a moderate amount of interacting moieties along the polymer chain results in an enhanced intermolecular interaction with SWNT, which translates to an optimum nanoparticle homogeneity. Calculations from density functional theory and Flory-Huggins theory correlate with the experimental results, which illustrate that chain connectivity is critical in controlling the accessibility of the functional groups to form intermolecular interactions. Thus, controlling the amount of interacting functional groups throughout the polymer chain such that an adequate distance between them is realized will direct the extent of charge transfer interaction, which enables tuning the SWNT dispersion. The second part of this dissertation focuses on the elucidation of the morphology of these nanoparticle entities in a polymer matrix. The observance of microphase separated peaks in the scattering patterns of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanocomposites indicate an ordering of the PAN polymer induced by the carbon nanotube cage, which could either be due to a thermodynamically bound layer around the SWNT or the occurrence of SWNT-induced PAN crystallization. Finally, UV-Vis measurements were performed on SWNT-polymer suspension in order to comprehend the interactions that occur during nanocomposite fabrication. These results demonstrate that SWNT dispersions in pure N, N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) are stabilized by the adsorption of polymers onto the SWNTs.

The work presented in this dissertation attempts to form an understanding of the importance of polymer connectivity and nanoparticle shape and curvature on the formation of non-covalent interactions between polymer and nanoparticles by monitoring the dispersion of nanoparticles in copolymers containing functionalities that can form non-covalent interactions with carbon nanoparticles. The first portion of this study is to gain a fundamental understanding of the role of electron donating/withdrawing moieties on the dispersion of the fullerenes in copolymers. UV-Vis spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction were used to quantify the miscibility limit of C60 fullerene with the incorporation of electron donor-acceptor interactions (EDA) between the polymer and fullerene. The miscibility and dispersion of the nanoparticles in a polymer matrix are interpreted to indicate the extent of intermolecular interactions, in this case non-covalent EDA interactions. Experimental data indicate that the presence of a minority of interacting functional groups within the polymer chains leads to an optimum interaction between polymer and fullerene. This is further affirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations that specify the binding energy between interacting monomers and fullerenes. The second portion focuses on the impact of sample preparation on the dispersion of graphene nanocomposites. Visualization and transparency are used to quantify the dispersion of graphene in the polymer matrix. In addition, differential scanning Calorimetry (DSC) also provides insight into the efficiency of the preparation process in forming a homogeneous sample, where rapid precipitation and solvent evaporation are studied. Examining the change in glass transition temperature, T[subscript g], with nanoparticle addition also provides insight into the level of interaction and dispersion in the graphene nanocomposites. The approach of utilizing non-covalent interactions to enhance the dispersion of polymer nanocomposites is realized by varying the functional group in the copolymer chains, while the impact of nanoparticle shape is also examined. The optimum enhancement of dispersion is interpreted in terms of the improvement of interaction between polymer and nanocomposites. This interpretation leads to the conclusion that chain connectivity and the ability of the polymer to conform to the nanoparticle shape are two important factors that govern the formation of non-covalent interactions in polymer nanocomposites.
