The atmosphere is an important pathway for the transport of continentally-derived material to the oceans. In this respect the Mediterranean Sea is of special importance because its atmosphere receives inputs of anthropogenic aerosols from the north and desert- derived Saharan dusts from the south. The dusts, much of which is transported in the form of seasonal `pulses', have important effects on climate, marine chemistry and sedimentation in the Mediterranean Sea. This volume brings together reviews and specific-topic papers on the following aspects of Saharan dust transport to the Mediterranean Sea: (i) the modelling of Saharan dust transport, (ii) the chemistry and mineralogy of the dusts and their effect on precipitation, (iii) the contribution of the dusts to marine sedimentation, (iv) the aerobiology of the dusts, and (v) climatic implications of Saharan dust transport. The volume is aimed at students and researchers with an interest in the climate, biogeochemistry and geology of the Mediterranean Sea.

The potential capacity of fertilization of surface oceans by atmospheric deposition is of scientific interest. This is especially true in the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea. Its surface waters are extremely poor in nutrients necessary for plankton growth. At the same time, it borders with the largest and most active desert area in the world and the atmosphere over the basin is subject to frequent injections of mineral dust particles. Moreover, future scenarios foresee increases in the region's aridity, thus increasing the dust load, as well as changes in ocean stratification that will increase the potential impact of dust deposition on surface waters. Thus, it is important to study the links between deposition and plankton stimulation. In this context, the present thesis addresses relationships between desert dust deposition and phytoplankton dynamics in the Mediterranean Sea. It places especial emphasis: (1) on the seasonal and geographical patterns of both dust deposition and chlorophyll variability, (2) on the correlation between dust deposition and chlorophyll concentration, (3) on the analysis of the large deposition events and (4) on the effects on chlorophyll concentration due to very large dust deposition events occurred between 2000 and 2007. Broadly, dust deposition seasonal dynamics shows highest values in late autumn and winter in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean. While, the high dust deposition occurs close to Africa with a decreasing gradient from South to North in the basin. By contrast, the distribution of chlorophyll shows decreasing gradients both from West to East and from North to South. In addition, its broadest variability was found in the Western Mediterranean, coinciding with the highest chlorophyll concentrations on average. Positive correlations between dust deposition and chlorophyll concentration were found in large areas of the Mediterranean Sea, with a clear South to North decreasing gradient in correlation coefficient. This is especially true for the Central and the Eastern Mediterranean, where dust deposition dynamics matches with chlorophyll annual dynamics. Areas with positive correlations can be found during all seasons, although it is in spring when we see the largest correlation coefficients mainly in the Central, Eastern and Southwestern Mediterranean. Finally, 153 large dust deposition events were identified between 2000 and 2007. May of them occurred in the years 2000 and 2004, especially in autumn and winter even if they showed a high variability. The Eastern Mediterranean was more affected by the extensive events especially in winter. About the very large dust deposition events, 31 were identified during this period. They were distributed unequally over seasons and over the Mediterranean sub-basins, occurring mainly in autumn and winter in the Central and eastern Mediterranean. Chlorophyll concentration increases significantly after very large dust deposition events showing peaks in concentration between days 1 and 6 after the event, with chlorophyll increments ranging from 13% to 345% for the different outbreaks. The impact of these large events on chlorophyll shows a decreasing trend from west to east and seems to be related to the eastward increasing importance of heterotrophic bacteria with respect to phytoplankton.

In oligotrophic environments, dust and nutrient inputs via atmospheric routes are considered important sources of macro-nutrients and micro-trace metals fuelling primary and secondary production. Yet, the impact of these dust inputs on the microbial populations is not fully investigated in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS). The response of oligotrophic systems to dust inputs, whether as positive or negative feedbacks to autotrophic and heterotrophic production and thus to biogeochemical cycling, is important to examine further. Experimental studies have explored nutrient additions in various combinations to determine the limiting resource to productivity or N2 fixation. Recent experimental studies have applied dust enrichments to bottle or mesocosm incubations of seawater from different oceanic regions. This research topic presents two Eastern Mediterranean dust addition mesocosm experiments using, for the first time, real aerosol additions, pure Saharan dust and mixed aerosols (a natural mixture of desert dust and polluted European particles), as well as other EMS aerosol experimental studies. The Topic includes manuscripts introducing results on: a) the impact of Saharan dust vs mixed aerosols on the autotrophic and heterotrophic surface microbial populations in the EMS, b) the impact of single vs multi-pulses of Saharan dust introduction into the pelagic environment of the EMS and c) other experimental studies of aerosol impacts on the EMS ecosystem.

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Paleoclimatology and Paleometeorology: Modem and Past Patterns of Global Atmospheric Transport" (held at Oracle, Arizona, USA from November 17-19, 1987) brought together atmospheric chemists, physicists, and meteorologists who study the origin and transport of modem-day mineral and biological aerosols with geologists and paleobotanists who study the sedimentary record of eolian and hydrologic processes along with modelers who study and conceptualize the processes influencing atmospheric transport at present and in the past. Presentations at the workshop provided a guide to our present knowledge of the entire spectrum of processes and phenomena important to the generation, transport, and deposition of eolian terrigenous material that ultimately becomes part of the geologic record and the modeling techniques that used to represent these processes.
