Excerpt from Hyde Park Historical Record, Vol. 5: 1905 Amos H. Brainard, the first President of Hyde Park Historical Society, was born in Newburyport, Mass, March 27, 1824, and Spent his childhood and youth in his native city, acquiring his education in the public schools. During his early life he was variously employed, mostly in mechanics, and learned the trade of carriage maker in Boston. Subsequently he established a machine shop in that city and conducted a small business. After a few years he transferred this business to Hyde Park and incorporated it under the name of the Union Vise Company, with its factory on Business Street, near Glenwood avenue. Five years later he began the manufacture of milling machines in a modest way. Under his intelligent and active management, this business gradually increased, requiring larger factories and greater facilities, until he employed upwards of one hundred and fifty skilled workmen. His machines were sold not only in the markets of America but also in Europe and Asia, several shipments being made to China. The success of this enterprise was largely owing to Mr. Brainard's inventive genius and the patents he procured. In fact he was the pioneer in the manufacture of milling machines, and being possessed of superior intelligence and rare energy, he pushed the new machines rapidly to the front and they soon became of first importance in all large establishments work ing in iron and steel.
