Edited by early music experts Hugh Keyte and Andrew Parrott, this anthology of Christmas carols is the most comprehensive collection ever made, spanning seven centuries of caroling in Britain, continental Europe, and North America. Containing music and text of 201 carols, many in more than one setting, the book is organized in two sections: composed carols, ranging from medieval Gregorian chants to modern compositions, and folk carols, including not only traditional Anglo-American songs but Irish, Welsh, German, Czech, Polish, French, Basque, Catalan, Sicilian, and West Indian songs as well. Each carol is set in four-part harmony, with lyrics in both the original language and English. Accompanying each song are detailed scholarly notes on the history of the carol and on performance of the setting presented. The introduction to the volume offers a general history of carols and caroling, and appendices provide scholarly essays on such topics as fifteenth-century pronunciation, English country and United States primitive traditions, and the revival of the English folk carol. The Oxford Book of Carols, published in 1928, is still one of Oxford's best-loved books among scholars, church choristers, and the vast number of people who enjoy singing carols. This volume is not intended to replace this classic but to supplement it. Reflecting significant developments in musicology over the past sixty years, it embodies a radical reappraisal of the repertory and a fresh approach to it. The wealth of information it contains will make it essential for musicologists and other scholars, while the beauty of the carols themselves will enchant general readers and amateur songsters alike.

The Beggar and the Bluebirdis a modern-day fairytale in the tradition of Hans Christian Anderson and the Grimm Brothers. It tells the moving story of a little bird whose flight southward for the winter keeps getting delayed because of the strange requests of a local street beggar. The beggar asks the bird to deliver bread to a homeless man, money to a widow with children, and a gold cross to a sick boy in the hospital. As a result of performing these acts of mercy, the kind bird gets caught in a massive winter snowstorm. All seems lost, until an astonishing turn of events reveals the true identity of the street beggar. An inspiring story of risk and sacrifice, The Beggar and the Bluebird teaches children the true meaning of gift-giving and demonstrates that great love is always rewarded by God--though often not in ways we can predict.

Renowned children's book illustrator Ian Wallace brings his masterful ability to paint landscape and his cultural sensitivity to The Huron Carol, a beautiful and unusual song with a rich history. In the early 1600s Father Jean de Brébeuf came to Canada from his native France as a Jesuit missionary. He settled among the Huron, or Ouendat, people in what is now Midland, Ontario. Despite his missionary zeal, Brébeuf was sensitive to the people with whom he lived. He learned their language and he wrote, in Huron, the original version of this famous Christmas carol. He and his fellow priests, called Black Robes, and many of their Huron parishioners were killed in an Iroquois raid in 1649. But Brébeuf's carol continued to be sung by successive generations of Hurons. Then in 1926, Toronto writer Jesse Edgar Middleton, inspired by Brébeuf, wrote his own version of the carol in English. His are the familiar words we sing today, describing the Huron landscape, flora and fauna in telling the Christmas story. Ian Wallace's luminous illustrations, set against the dramatic backdrop of Georgian Bay, make this a stunning Christmas gift book. Multilingual versions of the text, the music and a full description of how this carol has come down to us today are included.

Richly evocative of native Huron culture and mythology, and penned by the patron saint of Canada, Father Jean de Brébeuf,The Huron Carol is a classic lyric that puts a distinctly North American spin on the well known Nativity story. Nominated for the Governor General’s Award for children’s illustration, Tyrrell’s images fuse these lyrics with elements of native life and landscape to create an elegant and evocative rendition of the carol. With delicate attention to detail, earthy tones and a mystical feel, each panel of Tyrrell’s art work gives children a window into the life of a bygone era; from the birch bark of the trees, to the long houses of the village and the layered leathers of the Huron dress. First sung in the Huron language for one hundred years, then translated into French and finally English,The Huron Carol has been a part of Canadian holiday celebrations for generations. Now, Frances Tyrrell gives today’s children, and their parents, a chance to experience this tradition for themselves. “Frances Tyrrell`s elegant and entrancing art takes us back in time and into the lives of Native Americans.†—Bookloons.com "The Huron Carol is quite amazing with its large print, wonderful illustrations and exquisite wording. —Sarah’s Stars Visit Frances Tyrrell`s personal website at: http://www.francestyrrell.com/
