Johann Wendel Hautz was born in 1669 in Germary. Several of his children came to America and settle first in Pennsylvania. Later descendants moved further west. A number were converts of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and came west with the pioneers. Many of the other descendants still live in the midwest.

The Hauenstein/Howenstine/Howenstein families of Switzerland and Germany and later in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri and elsewhere. One early ancestor was Andrew Hauenstein (1779-1838), son of Hans Jacob Hauenstein, who was born in Unterendingen, Aargau, Switzerland. He died in Baugo Twp., Elkhart, Indiana. He emigrated from Switzer- land in 1831 and settled in Wayne County, Ohio. He was married to Barbary Hauenstein (1788-1838), daughter of Johannes Hauenstein and Anna Maria Werder, in 1810 in Unterendingen, Aargau, Switzerland.

"In 1835 John Carl went again to Germany, married Anna Wohlgemuth of Albisheim on the Primm, April 12, 1837, went at once the same year to America."--Page 24. They located first in Rossville, Butler County, Ohio, then in 1839 moved to Fort Madison, Iowa Territory and later settling " ... on Sugar creek in West Point township of Lee County in the Territory of Iowa."--P. 52. Anna Wohlgemuth Krehbiel died 1 April 1840 in Lee County, Iowa Territory. Six years after his wife Anna died, John Carl married Katherina Raeber the daughter of an early Lee County Amish preacher, Christian Raeber. "She was born April 18, 1826, at Hagenau, Near Maersburg on the sea in Baden, Germany. John Carl Krehbiel died " ... at the age of 75 and was laid to rest in the West Point cemetery on Feb. 26, 1886.
