On a warm afternoon in the fall of 1861 Carter Druse is on picket duty on top of a cliff overlooking a valley where five regiments of the Union army are resting. The enemy is near, and the Union force means to surprise them in the night unless “accident or vigilance” forewarns them. Druse had been sleeping but wakes to see a man on a horse surveying the activity in the valley below. He sights his rifle, but hesitates when the rider turns and seems to look straight at him. In a crisis of conscience, Druse questions where his duty lies. Ambrose Bierce's short story collection, A Son of the Gods, and A Horseman in the Sky, offers a glimpse into the writer's trademark cynical and darkly humorous style. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, Bierce explores themes of war, fate, and morality in a way that is both thought-provoking and unsettling. Through vivid descriptions and sharp dialogue, Bierce's writing showcases his mastery of the short story form and his ability to evoke a sense of unease in the reader. The collection is a prime example of Bierce's distinctive voice and his unique perspective on the human experience. Ambrose Bierce, a veteran of the Civil War himself, drew inspiration from his own experiences and observations of the conflict to create these haunting and memorable stories. His background as a soldier informs his portrayal of the horrors of war and the complexities of human nature. Bierce's sharp wit and keen insight shine through in A Son of the Gods, and A Horseman in the Sky, showcasing his talent as a writer and a keen observer of the human condition. I highly recommend A Son of the Gods, and A Horseman in the Sky to readers who appreciate dark and thought-provoking literature. Bierce's stories offer a unique perspective on war and its effects on the individuals caught up in its grip, making this collection a must-read for fans of classic American literature.

For eighteen-year-old Gideon Blake, nothing but death can keep him from achieving his goal of becoming a U.S. Army Ranger. As it turns out, it does. Over the coming weeks, he and the other horsemen--Conquest, Famine, and Death--are brought together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence. They fail. Now--bound, bloodied, and drugged--Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about his role in a battle that has become an international incident. If he stands any chance of saving his friends and the girl he's fallen for--not to mention all of humankind--he needs to convince the skeptical government officials the world is in imminent danger.
