Excerpt from The Holy Trinity Lord Bacon (died 1626 A. D.), the founder of modem philosophy, the father of the modern method in the search for truth, has taught the world first to gain as full possession as possible of the facts in any given field, and then to examine into the relations of those facts and discover, if possible, the principles underlying them, and then proceed to draw conclusions, and to arrange the whole into an orderly system. This is called the inductive method in the study of natural science. In the study of biblical truth the same method should be pursued. Excerpt from The Trinity New Testament revelation, how the doctrine bears vitally on thought and conduct to-day. There is nothing intentionally controversial in the book, and I crave pardon of any, Unitarian or Catholic, whom it may offend by the eagerness and strength of the conviction which is behind it. I have not ventured directly to address those who differ from me, or to assume that they will read my book; but I have tried to write so that all readers may realise how the faith once for all delivered to the saints presents itself to one, who finds more in it every year to satisfy the intellect and to nourish the heart. Excerpt from The Mystery of the Holy Trinity, in Oldest Judaism The Doctors and Fathers of the Church agree in recognizing that the august-mystery of the Blessed Trinity is not found explicitly revealed in any of the pages of the Old Testament. This mystery is the supreme manifestation of God's most intimate life. To it, the entire Christian revelation converges, and the Divine Master seems to have reserved to Him self the privilege of teaching it to men in person, when He dwelt amongst them. With good reason, however, could St. Augustine say that the Scrip tures of the Old and the New Testament, if read with a true Christian Spirit, testify that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are one only God in the unity of essence and substance. In fact, from the earliest dawn of man's existence, the Divine Goodness has deigned to manifest some thing of the Splendor of this supreme and adorable mystery. On casting a glance over the majestic pages of Genesis, it seems impossible to resist the impression that, beneath a form of elocution strange to us, but easy and altogether sublime, there is hid den something mysterious pertaining to the essence and personality of that God, who reveals Himself to our astonished sense in the pronouncing of a word. Which, resounding through the fathomless abysses of nothingness, calls forth into existence the heavens and the earth, and the whole creation, of which they form part. Excerpt from The Blessed Trinity It is truly meet and just, right and available unto salvation that we Should at all times and m all places give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, ever lasting God: who with thine orily begotten Son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord not in the Oneness of a Single person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For that which we believe from thy revelation concerning thy glory, that same we believe of thy Son, that same Of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, we Shall adore distinction in persons, oneness in being, equality in majesty which Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim too and the Seraphim do praise; day by day they cease not to cry out. Excerpt from Evolution and the Doctrine of the Trinity The best way to start such a restatement of the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity seemed to be by examining anew the conception of personality, both in its manward and Godward aspects. When this had been done, a fresh start was made in the examination of Christhood the link between Godhead and manhood. Yet another starting point presented itself in the almost universal belief in human immortality. Lastly, the evolution of personality itself demanded consideration. As in each and all of these matters one was almost immediately faced with the double problem of imman ence and transcendence, it quickly became clear that little progress could be made until these had been care fully considered. Therefore a preliminary chapter on this subject was worked out. Although logically this chapter had to stand first, it is recommended that the reading of it be postponed until the first five chapters, at least, if not the whole of the rest of the book, have been studied. The subject matter is peculiarly difficult and technical, and its importance may escape notice until the reader has actually been brought face to face with the problems as they occur in the general discussion. It will be seen that the bulk of the book, therefore, consists of a series of separate essays which converge upon the different aspects of personality. As such they are necessarily not very closely articulated with one another, and it is only in the final chapter that they are linked so that a judgment of the evidence as a whole becomes possible. Excerpt from Conferences on the Blessed Trinity My Dear and Esteemed Friend: This treatise embraces lectures and sermons delivered frequently during a period of thirty-eight years in the holy ministry, and varying in length, style, and form to suit the characters of the different audiences. Honored with the chair of theology in this college, the class recitations and doctrinal discussions have given the theses their present title and shape. At the request of several friends I now offer them for perusal to the American people, and in fact to all serious readers, whether Catholic or non-Catholic. Excerpt from A Plain Argumentative Sermon, on the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity As ideas subversive of the doctrine of the Trinity are not unfrequently advanced in the pulpit; and as this doctrine constitutes a promi nent article in the faith once delivered to the saints, for which we are exhorted earnestly to contend, it has appeared to me, that I mayd do a service to the Church of Christ, by pub lishmg and disseminating the following very plain and instructive discourse on that doctrine.
