Excerpt from The History of the Restoration of Monarchy in France, Vol. 4 While the Prince was thus offering an honourable capitu lation at Cadiz, and a security to the vanquished in the provinces, he made a decisive assault on the peninsula of the Trocadero, the fortifications of which kept our mortars too distant from the city The army, the fleet, and the Prince himself attacked this volcano of artillery with that cool bravery which never thinks of death in the performance of duty, and which constitutes in the general and the troops that sangfroid of heroism so peculiarly French. The Duke d'an'gouléme exposed himself to the fire like the boldest of his grenadiers. The Prince of Carignan, who had been exiled from his country for his participation in the revolution of Turin, and who was desirous of redeeming his fault by repentance made illustrious on the field of battle, marched as a volunteer to the assault on the Trocadero, in the front rank of the grenadiers of the royal guard. What a sad and singular destiny was that of this prince, brave but deficient in judgment, who had excited to revolt the army of his uncle the King of Sardinia, in favour of the Spanish Constitution, and was now fighting against that identical Constitution before the walls of Cadiz and who, after having subsequently persecuted and punished, while on the throne, during a long and ungrateful reign, the accomplices of his first revolutionary attempt, was to proclaim in Italy in 1848, the cause of independence and revolution, and to return, finally, near that same sea of Spain, to die of grief for his defeat: the victim by turns of the two causes which he had promoted, deserted, combated, and served, but always at the wrong time. Excerpt from The History of the Restoration, Vol. 1: Monarchy in France The rapidity of time supplies the place of distance. When we are separated by many events from the period we undertake to illustrate, we fancy that a lapse of ages has intervened. The years that have flown by since my birth have been full of vicissitudes, of falling nations, of reigns, empires, and republics. Contemporary history has, in fact, ceased to exist; for the days that have just gone by, seem already to have sunk deep into the shadow of the past. The perspective recedes by the grandeur and the multitude of events which interpose between the eye and the memory. I scarcely exceed the middle age of man, and I have already lived under ten dominations, or ten different governments, in France. Between infancy and maturity I have witnessed ten revolutions: the Constitutional Government of Louis XVI., the first Republic, the Directory, the Consulate, the Empire, the first Restoration in 1814, the Second Government of the "Hundred Days" by Napoleon, the Second Restoration in 1815, the Reign of Louis Philippe, and the Second Republic: - ten cataracts, by which the spirit of modern liberty and the stationary or obstructive spirit have endeavoured, by turns, to descend or to remount the declivity of revolutions.
