Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, Vol. 2 In the vear 1849, the Synod of South Carolina adopted a scheme for securing a History of the Church covered by their jurisdiction. The scheme was elaborate, embracing many particulars: and it was the pleasure of Svnod to appoint the present writer their Historio grapher. The ofiice involved an amount of labor and consumption of time, in the preparation of the first volume, of whlch he did not have the least conception, although the scheme, as marked out, was not fully aecom plished. The History was to be brought down to 1850, the middle of this Century. In 1870 the first volume was issued, bringing the work down to the year 1800. The volume which is now issued, has been prepared at such intervals as could be secured in vacation, when the author was relieved from his ordinary official duties. As the whole of an ordinary generation has passed away-since the year 1850, the year tn which his appointment extended, it has been the desire of the author to bring the History down more nearly to the present time, and he had, to some extent, received the materials for doing so. But dur ing the past Summer his health began seriously to fail him, and his most judicious friends advised him to stop at the original limit of saying that it was the proper place to stop: that the History of the Church through our-late civil war, and the efforts it put forth in those days of supreme trial and since, deserve a fuller treatment than he could now give it. To this advice he has yielded, and although this did not occur until the work showed manifest allusions in several instances to a later period, he removed from the remainder of his manu script all such references, except those which could not well be erased. Some of the materials furnished from the Churches are brief. Others far more extended, which, in some instances, have been greatlv abbre viated, and in others more amply given. The author is fully conscious of the many defects of his work, and submits the result of his labors to that indulgence of his brethren which it so greatly needs. Excerpt from A Popular History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America This volume is designed to trace concisely but clearly the History and Principles of the Presbyterian Church from the time of Henry VIII. to the close of the General Assembly of 1899. The effort has been to present the facts in such history, and note their influence; meanwhile, to give special attention to the all-important phase of the inner Christian life of the Church. In ascertaining the knowledge in respect to the latter subject, attention has been directed, as occasion required, to the lives and labors of leading men in the ministry, as well as laymen, around whom clustered influences for good, that often extended far and wide in their respective communities, and even to the Church at large. The author has availed himself of highly important and original documents pertaining to the Congregationalists and Presbyterians during the Colonial period. (See authorities consulted.) When preparing his "Four Hundred Years of American History," the attention of the author was often drawn to the influence of the Presbyterian Church during the last half century of the Colonial times and also during the current growth of our national life. This influence was felt upon the domestic and Christian as well as upon the political life of the people. In our country, governed as it is by representatives elected by the people themselves, the moral connection between political and church life is consistent and peculiarly intimate. It therefore comes within the scope of this history to trace the influences, good or bad, of the events and policies, whereby the condition of public affairs has incidentally aided the progress of the Church, and sometimes had a retarding effect, as in the case of war or of financial or industrial disturbances whereby all the citizens were more or less affected. Excerpt from Unfinished Business of the Presbyterian Church in America IT is a good thing for each denomination to seek to determine as clearly as it can its own distinctive duty. Unless it does this it is not in a position to plan its proper courses Of action or to draw out and use the resources of its membership. It is in no presumptuous or vaunting Spirit that the different groups of Christians in our country to-day are seeking thus to ascertain each its own rightful share in the one great task. They are working together in more united and trustful relations than ever before and their work both separately and together will be far more effective by reason Of their sure discernment Of their own respective Obligations. Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Vol. 1 The reunion of the two branches of the Presbyterian Church in this country, happily effected in 1869 after a division of more than thirty years, has called for the revision of a work prepared during the period of their separation. It has not been thought necessary to add to it the record of the steps Which led to the reunion, as these are embodied in the volume entitled Presby terian Reunion Memorial, published in 1870; but in order to do impartial justice to the position and views of the two parties from the time when they first appeared, certain changes and modifications of statement have been deemed necessary, and these have been embodied in this revised edition. So far as most of the statements of facts are con cerned, very little change has been required, but what before was asserted without qualification as to the rela tion and action of the two parties has been so modified that the party by Whom such assertion was regarded as historically true or just is alone made responsible for it. In other words, the historian has allowed each party to speak for itself, representing its own views, while the reader is left at liberty to draw his own conclusions. Excerpt from History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Under the same limitations the plan was formed about the different States. It was to give the origin of the church in each State, with as much fullness of detail as could well be secured, extending the record only to the organization of the first presbytery, closing that chapter with a rapid summary view of the present condition of our church in that part of the field. There were certain subjects belonging to 'all periods to which special chapters were reserved, to be placed at the last of the book; and if they brought out any thing further from the work of our people in any particular State, at any later period, all well; and if not, there would be no further notice taken of that portion of the church. The question of brief biographical sketches was also care fully weighed, and finally decided in the negative. To this decision an exception was made in the case of those gener ally called the fathers of the church. If a biography formed part of the very thread of the history which I was writing, just so far was it also made a part of this volume. There were placed in my hands some very interesting biographies which contained no Single item that could be used accord ing to my established programme of operations. Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church, in the State of Illinois, Vol. 1 This volume is called presbyterianism IN illinois, volume I. It is, however, confined to the portion Of the State upon and south of Wabash Railroad, from Danville to Naples, and east Of the Illinois river, with the exceptions Of Har din, Calhoun county, and the sketch Of Aratus Kent. I intended originally to have brought it forward to 1876, but the material was much more than I had anticipated, and after severe condensation, and leaving out entirely much that I would have gladly inserted, I have been obliged to stop with the period of the re-union. About a second volume, which may embrace the remaining portions of the State, I have at present no formed purpose. This volume is stereotyped and copy-righted. Another-may be prepared, uniform with this and upon the same general plan, if circumstances favor. Of the United, Associate and Cumberland Presbyterian 'church, I have not spoken. I have a pretty strong convie tion that in one or two generations all these will be one with ours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
