Excerpt from The History of the Navy of the United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2 While biographies of naval men are usually replete with interest, on account of the hazards and stirring incidents of the sea, few general records of nautical events have been found to attract attention, beyond the value that is attached to naked facts. If such has been the case with most of the histories of even the marine of Great Britain, a service that admits of the unity and interest that belong to the operations of fleets, still more may it be looked for in the records of the isolated and simpler incidents of a navy like that of the United States. The difficulty of overcoming this great obstacle has been foreseen from the commencement of this work, and some attempts, that are connected with the arrangements of the subject, have been made to obviate it. The writer is far from flattering himself with entire success, for a history of detached combats is, in truth, a series of episodes, the mind scarcely becoming concentrated on one, when it is required to give its attention to another, while the connecting materials, according to the ordinary practice, are merely a dry detail of documents. Excerpt from The History of the Navy of the United States of America, Vol. 2 of 2 The government soon became aware of the necessity of possessing some light cruisers, which arc to a marine, what the eyes and nerves are to the physical formation of man. Without vessels of this character, a commander could never conduct a vigorous blockade, like that required before Tripoli, in particular; and a law passed February 1803, authorising the construction of two brigs and two schooners. In the course of the spring of that year, these vessels were built, and the navy received an addition to its list, of the Argus 10, Siren 10, Nautilus 12, and Vixen 12. The two former were beautiful and very efficient brigs, mounting 16 twenty-four-pound carronades, and 2 long twelves; and the two latter were schooners, carrying 12 eighteen-pound carronades, and 2 light long guns, each. They were all finely modelled and serviceable vessels of their size, and arc now intimately associated with the early traditions of the navy. Excerpt from The History of the Navy During the Rebellion, Vol. 1 With England and France, therefore, the most interesting question connected with our affairs has been, whether we could create a truly formidable Navy. Our naval strength was the standard by which they measured their power to attack, and ours to defend. They did not believe it possible for us to pro duce a Navy in a few months which could both seal up our long line of sea-coast and defy their own most formidable ships, and this mistaken judgment was the main influence in deciding their policy in regard to American affairs. A history of the Navy, then, is a history of that power by which Europe gauges our national importance, and by which our rank among nations is assigned: because, until a true Christian civilization prevails, the nobler attributes of a nation will be overlooked in view of its ability to carry on a great war; and because, if the 'united States should ever wage a great European war, the battles would be mainly upon the seas. While our Army has done a work beyond all praise, and has settled the question of our ability to defend our territory against any force which could be brought here, the Navy has saved us from foreign intervention that could not have been otherwise avoided, while at the same time its labors in putting down the rebellion have been far greater than has been gener ally supposed. Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy, Vol. 1 of 3: From 1775 to 1901 It would be difficult to exaggerate the value of the services that have been rendered by the United States navy. The Continental cruisers and privateers - the latter corresponding to the militia on land - during the War of the Revolution captured about eight hundred vessels from the enemy, and, making the moderate allowance of fifteen men to each craft, we have a total of twelve thousand prisoners taken on. the high seas by a maritime force which at no time consisted of more than five thousand men. About five hundred of these prisoners were soldiers of some of the best English regiments, and had they been captured on land the incident would have occupied many pages in our histories. It was by means of our maritime forces that the American armies were supplied with the munitions of war during that terrible struggle. In our two years of naval war with France the work was all done by the navy. About eighty vessels, mostly privateers, carrying over three thousand men, were captured from the enemy. Again, the wars with the States of Barbary were brought to a highly honorable termination by the unaided efforts of the navy, the United States securing privileges that had been denied to European powers. The naval War of 1812 did more to humble the pride of Great Britain than any other contest. The Revolution was a struggle for independence on land, but it required a second fight to secure our "inalienable rights" on the high seas. So numerous did they finally become, that no merchant dared to send a ship to the West Indies; and the pirates, finding that they had fairly exterminated their game, were fain to turn land wards for further booty. It was an Englishman that showed the sea rovers this new plan of pillage; one Louis Scott, who descended upon the town of Campeche, and, after stripping the place to the bare walls, demanded that a heavy tribute be paid him, in default of which he would burn the town. Loaded with booty, he sailed back to the buc caneers' haunts in the Tortugas. This expedition was the example that the buccaneers followed for the next few years.
