Excerpt from The History of Roxbury Town The object of a town history is to gather up and record family, local, village details. Part are those of every day life. Part belong to general history, but are so minute or multitudinous as to escape its grasp. Yet all history is made up of these, and each, and the group of each town, may illustrate it, as the life of each man will give some insight into the spirit of his time. There is an interest attached to these accounts of small places, of the same sort as that which is ex cited by the biography of an individual. We like to know the motives, reasons and method of a man's ac tion, as every child wishes to see a watch opened. In general men care less for the result, however great, than for the petty moving causes in operation. And the idea that each man is a wheel in the great ma chine, weighs more with men than they think. But, after all, the chief interest attached to these matters is of a very different sort, and, if this were the place. Excerpt from History of the West Roxbury Park: How Obtained; Disregard of Private Rights; Absolute Injustice; Arbitrary Laws; Right of Eminent Domain; 1873 to 1887 Sometime during the spring of 1873 the question of establishing a system of Public Parks for the city of Boston was first suggested and brought before the citizens, who heartily and earnestly approved the project. It was felt that a large enterprising city like Boston, the metropolis of New England, possessing ample wealth and enjoying such a wide-spread reputation at home and abroad for refinement and culture, should not fall behind other noted cities of the world in providing for its citizens broad fields and acres for a public domain, where our own citizens and strangers alike could meet together with freedom, on common ground, to breathe the pure air of heaven; to bask in the health-giving sunshine of the country; to enjoy its sylvan shade, its rustic scenery, and the pleasure of friendly meetings and friendly greetings. The city government, after a long delay interspersed with hostile conflicts and hard fought battles, finally concluded to follow the example of other thrifty cities, and commence a series of public parks, to be established in different parts of the city, in order to accommodate, and at the same time to satisfy the tax payers and tax grumblers in the various sections. Thus was inaugurated an enterprise worthy the high standard Boston occupies as one of the leading commercial cities in this country. Excerpt from The Roxbury Latin School: An Outline of Its History Read at the Semi-Annual Meeting of the American Antiquarian Society, April 27, 1887 But this school, besides taking the third rank in age among the existing schools of this country, is still more remarkable in another respect, namely, that it is, I believe, the only school which, having never received from the State or town any endowment, grant or subsidy, or any thing from the proceeds of taxation, except a small annual payment for a few years from the town in consideration of an enlargement of its course of study, is yet and has been, almost from its origin, as free to all the inhabitants of the town or in later days of the territory within the original town limits, as the public town or city schools. There may be other schools of comparatively recent foundation of which the same is true, but I do not know of any.
