Excerpt from The History of Religion in England The Religion of England - Ever since the English were a nation, their religion has been. That of the Catholic Church of Christ. From the time that the Angles, Saxons, and J utes became Christians to the Reformation, from the sixth to the sixteenth century, all religious people in England were members of the Church. Since the Reformation other religious bodies have sprung into existence, some of them differing slightly, some very materially, from the Church; have attracted to themselves numbers of earnest and devout people; and have exercised a cor responding influence, from time to time, upon the government and policy of England. Still the majority of Englishmen have always remained members of the Church, and consequently the History of Religion in England is mainly the History of the Church of England. Excerpt from The Church of England The history of the English Church begins with the conversion to Christianity of the English people. There were already Chris tians in all parts of Great Britain; where the English had conquered and settled there was a minority of serfs; elsewhere a Celtic population that was either independent or under English domination. But these Chris tians were to have, at the utmost, an influence upon English Christianity; they were not to control its structure or its character. Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 7 The publication of the History of the Reformation seems to have been first suggested to its author by the appearance of the new French translation of Sanders' book de origine ac progressu Schismatis Anglicani. This work had been printed at Cologne in 1585, and had passed through several editions, and been translated into French in 1587. Upon the publication of the new translation by Maucroix at Paris in 1676, the author was diverted from the proposal made to him by Sir William Jones to undertake the history of England, and induced to write this History in answer to Sanders' work, which, he says, was at that time much cried up in France. At the time when he commenced his work he had, as he remarks in his Reflections on Atterbury, p. 25, had no sort of practice in our records, but took no small pains and charge for three years together in searching for materials, and submitted himself to the direction and advice of Bishop Stillingfleet, Sir John Marsham, and Mr. Petyt. He was at first unable to procure admittance into Sir John Cotton's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from General History of the Christian Religion and Church, Vol. 1 As the first volume Of my Church History is about to make its appearance in a better shape, I feel constrained to take this Oppor tunity of presenting you a testimony of my sincere respect and love, and my hearty thanks for all the instruction and excitement to thought derived from what you have said, both publicly and in the intercourse of private life, and for all you have done, during your residence here, in the service Of our common holy cause. When I dedicate a work of this character to a philosopher like you, I know that it is nothing foreign from your philosophy; for that takes history for its point of departure, and would teach us to understand it according to its inward essence. In striving to apprehend the history Of the church, not as a mere juxtaposition of outward facts, but as a development proceeding from within, and presenting an image and re ex Of internal history, I trust that I am serving a spirit which may claim some relationship to your philosophy, however feeble the powers with which it may be done. In what you publicly expressed respecting the stadia in the development of the Christian church, how much there was which struck in harmony with my own views I might feel some hesitation in laying before a man of your classical attainments, such a master Of form as well as Of matter, a work of whose defects, when compared with the idea at its foundation, no one can be more conscious than its author. But I know, too, that fellowship of spirit and feeling will be accounted of more worth by you than all else besides. Excerpt from Religious Writers of England These sketches are not offered as a History of English Religious Literature. Every reader will probably wonder why certain writers are included and certain others are omitted. The selection of names has been dictated partly by personal preference and partly by limits of space. But the selection, however arbitrary, will, it is hoped, be found fairly representative of different phases of belief and life which have appeared in successive epochs of English Christianity. It has not been possible to bring the Victorian era within the compass of the volume. A few of the chapters have already appeared in the form of magazine articles.
