Excerpt from The History of Normandy and of England, Vol. 4 § 1. We have seen how William the Conqueror has been gathered to his fathers. Usual pageantries ensued: loud praises bestowed upon the departed monarch by those who enjoyed his bounty or profited by his patronage. Poets abounded in court and cloister, expatiating upon his merits, vying with one another in composing the epitaph, worthy to be inscribed upon the rich tomb at Caen, raised between presbytery and choir, concealing William's last conquest, his contested grave. A splendid work was this memorial, studded with gems, and covered with the plates of precious metal hammered and embossed by Ottone, the Goldsmith - Otto Aurifaber in the pages of Domesday. Excerpt from The History of Normandy and of England, Vol. 1 The original edition ended with the accession of Henry I., but Vols. III. And IV. Were not published till after the Author's death. To the present edition will be added the later years of the reign of Henry I. And the reign of Stephen, hitherto unpublished. The history of the four N orman kings of England will thus be com pleted. In 'the advertisement to the second volume of the History, Sir F. Palgrave wrote: In the third volume I purpose to resume the essays elucidating the general relations of the mediaeval period, continuing the seyies prefixed to the first. The subjects next discussed will probably be - the Episcopate; the influences of Chris tianity upon the Fine Arts - also upon the cultivation of profane literature; all of which are in forwardness, having been draughted many years since. These essays were privately printed in Sir F. Palgrave's lifetime and will now be prefixed to the text of the third volume as originally intended.
