Excerpt from History of the People of Israel, Vol. 3: From the Time of Hezekiah Till the Return From Babylon This volume Will show how the work of the monotheistic prophets acquired such solidity that the terrible blow Which Nebuchadnezzar dealt to Jerusalem failed to destroy it. By a miracle of faith and hope unparalleled in history, the Iahveists of the prophetic reformation disseminated along the banks of the Euphrates Will bring about the return to Judea, the re-establishment of holy Wor Ship, the rebuilding of Jerusalem. I hope that I may be given the strength to delineate, in a fourth volume, the train of J ewish ideas up to the appear ance of Christianity, and thus to complete the cycle of religious history Which I have taken as my task. It is a hope Which I scarcely ventured to nourish a few years ago. I now think that I may Without presumption look forward to the completing of the Work Which has been the principal aim of my life. Excerpt from The History of Israel, Vol. 7 All that Christ could accomplish by coming into this our world of sense as the object of such a unique expectation, he accomplished by the life, labours, and death which we have already followed. He could not do anything higher, nor could he do anything lower, but he did most perfectly that which was required of him as this expected one, by living, acting, teaching, dying, and fulfilling the Divine Will, and, again, by submitting himself to its guidance to the utmost, in the very way in which we have seen all this was done by him. His work 011 earth as a man was perfected with the moment of his death. His entire life, teaching, and work, as it had been exhibited in the full light of history from his first public acts to his last suffering and death, was something in itself perfect, most lofty, and wholly unique; it was something which had never before been witnessed in the long course of Israel's history, and still less amongst the heathen; it was a summit to which all the previous history of Israel, in the first instance, and then also all that of the rest of humanity, aspired, which was more difficult to attain, and, at the same time, far higher than any previous conception and endeavour could anticipate. This life, with its highest inward perfection and its brightly radiant light, every smallest trait of which may become eternally instructive, and the smallest reminiscence of which may perpetually serve to Empire and elevate, is precisely. Excerpt from History, Prophecy and the Monuments, Vol. 3: Or Israel and the Nations IT is now over four years since the publication of the second instalment of the present work. The completion of my task has been retarded by many interruptions, of which the most serious came from the necessity laid upon me of preparing a somewhat lengthy biography of a deceased friend. Of the scope and subject-matter of this volume little needs to be said. The importance attached to the Hebrew prophecy of the period is justified when one considers how greatly the inner as well as the outer life of Israel was affected by other nations and peoples. Moreover, the essential character of prophecy is still mis understood by most educated people, and in the popular exposition of the prophets little attention is paid to the permanent and essential elements of their unique dis courses. The best way to begin the study of the prophets is to learn how their word and work are interwoven with the life and history of their times. I have also made an attempt to connect the non-prophetic and indirectly prophetic literature of Israel with its historical occasions or antecedents, though in this region of inquiry we tread upon much more uncertain ground. Excerpt from History of Israel, Vol. 4 Israel had now of its own accord, though not Without the influence of a higher force, entered on a new phase of its existence, in which the question would inevitably arise whether or not it would succeed in finding that larger prosperity which was the fond hope of the majority. It brought with it out of its past into the new and unknown future which lay before it, an abundance of recently-acquired and material blessings, the elevating sense of extensive power and dignity among the other nations of the world, together with the strong impulse to seek after wisdom even in every department of Nature. Nor was this all. Those who were moved by a deeper and sincerer Spirit further added the clear consciousness that Israel had only attained this prosperity and importance by a faithful and strenuous adhesion to the true religion, and they kept up either the active aspiration after a still more perfect king than David, or the blessed recollection of how the goal of this new stage of their history, the perfect human king of the community of the true God, had been in David almost if not altogether reached. That Solomon had, in the latter part of his reign, fallen further and further below this standard, was plainly recognised by the prophets and all the better minds of Israel; but neither of the two states into which the monarchy was now divided, had any clear idea how it was to be attained. Excerpt from The Foundations of Israel's History, Vol. 25 In all this history of religion, this record of God's revela tion of Himself to mankind, Israel has borne, we believe, not merely a leading role, but the leading role. This fact is con ceded by almost all the civilized world, even though men may differ as to the actual nature and extent of this leadership. Some there are, who grudgingly admit the fact, yet minimize it as much as possible. And some hold that another leader ship was instituted under a new dispensation nineteen hundred years ago. Others, and not a few, rate Israel's leadership more highly, and even recognize that it has not ceased unto the present day. Excerpt from The History of Israel, Vol. 6 It is true that at that time the Roman rule in its direct form extended only over Jerusalem and Samaria with their surrounding territory, both of which, after the expulsion of Archelaus, remained almost without interruption under it. The other provinces remained for the time under the Roman vassals. But precisely at this time everything depended on the attitude of Jerusalem particularly, and the other provinces likewise submitted pretty soon to the same fate. The fate, too, of J udeans and Samaritans who were living elsewhere, dispersed through the Roman empire, depended, on many main points, on that of the two capitals, particularly of Jerusalem. Numerous as were the small inequalities which the secular position of all the members of the ancient community of the true religion thus temporarily involved, they all completely disappear in presence of the absolute power of Rome as it then prevailed. Excerpt from The History of Israel to the Death of Moses ON being asked to write a Preface to this Translation of a portion of Professor Ewald's Geschichte des Volkes Israel, ' my first impulse was to reply that such a work needed none that the author is known to be one of the most intellectually powerful, as well as most learned and accurate of the Hebraists and Biblical scholars of the day; that his History of Israel, his largest, and perhaps his greatest work, is acknowledged by both friends and foes to be striking, original, and ingenious.
