Excerpt from Birmingham Species I had never seen they possessed a vivacity I had never beheld; I had been among dreamers, but now I saw men awake, their very step along the street showed vivacity every man seemed to know and prosecute his own affairs. The number of different industries carried on in Birmingham has been of great advantage to the city in giving stability to industry and in fostering variety of interest. The city has fewer men of great wealth than most of our other great industrial centres, but a considerable number of Birmingham manufacturers have attained to a fairly high standard of prosperity. Until recently, most of the leading citizens have lived within easy reach of the heart of the city, instead of escaping to more distant suburbs, and this has tended to prevent the detachment from civic interests that has been so injurious to some of our English towns. Birmingham has shown a special aptitude for developing the civic loyalty of the strangers within' its gates, and not a few of the men who are most closely associated with the public life of the city came to it from other parts of the country. Birmingham has, I think, less than other English cities of the clannishness that resents the intrusion of aliens. Excerpt from History of the Corporation of Birmingham, Vol. 3: 1885-1889 The several chapters have. Been read in manuscript by Oficers of the Corporation and members of the Council, to whom I am grateful for valuable criticisms and suggestions. I have especially to thank the Officers of the Health Department for checking the statistics given in the fifth chapter, and making the corrections rendered necessary by the error in the official estimate of population before the census of 1891. It must, however, be understood that the author is solely responsible for any inaccuracies that may be detected in the book, except those which reproduce errors, if any, contained in the original records on which the narrative is based. My task has been to select, according to the best of my judgment, from a very large number of recorded details, those that might be usefully repeated in a convenient book of reference. I have followed, as closely as seemed expedient, the arrange ment of topics adopted by Mr. Bunce in the second volume of this History, never deviating therefrom except after careful consideration. Wherever uniformity has been sacrificed, I trust that the reasons will be apparent and satisfactory. I have not supposed that, in asking me to become the historian of their achievements, the members of the City Council were also inviting me to assume the position of a critic. I have therefore endeavoured, though not with entire success, to avoid the intrusion of judgment and Opinion, and to resist the demon that tempts the most modest historian to try his hand at general remarks. I have borne in mind throughout that one thing which the general reader, if he condescends to read this book, will expect to find there, is a reasonable and particular account of the expansion of municipal expenditure. Of financial details, therefore, I have been unsparing, even to weariness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
