Excerpt from The History of Beaminster A word of thanks is due to Mr. A. M. Broadley for his kindness in contributing an article on the Worthiness of Beaminster, to Mr. J. Lane Kitson for his keen interest in supplying much local information, and for his exhaustive chapter on Manors and Copyholds and Inclosure' of Commons. Also to many others, too numerous to name, for without their courteous assistance this History of Beaminster could never have been written. Much remains yet to be recorded, and it may be that at some not far distant day an abler pen will produce a work on this old world Dorset town more worthy of acceptance than the present volume. Excerpt from History and Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family, Collateral Lines in Family Groups, Normandy, Great Britain and America, Vol. 1: Comprising the Ancestors and Descendants of Eltweed Pomeroy From Beaminster, County Dorset, England, 1630 In this connection, I desire to ask attention to the original method introduced in this volume of carrying through the book the collateral lines by presenting the descendants of Pomeroy mothers in family groups. This system not only enables the student to comprehend the collateral lines of each family which has been so treated. At a glance, but avoids the confusion incident to the projection of names other than Pomerov throughout the book in the several generations. Excerpt from History and Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family, Vol. 3: Collateral Lines in Family Groups, Normandy, Great Britain and America; Comprising the Ancestors and Descendants of Eltweed Pomeroy From Beaminster County Dorset, England, 1631 The cottages of La Pommeraye are also ancient, and simple are the lives of the very few villagers. There is no visible evidence that there anciently ever were more cottages and inhabitants here than now; in all probability there were less. It is highly probable that when Ralph de La Pommeraye left there for England he took most of the cottagers with him, for they were his servants. A few hundred yards past the church is a modern dweiling formerly owned by a Madame Vauxville. It is a good country house with a well-kept garden; stables and kennels are on the opposite Side of the highway. At this point of the road we are in a hollow, with little or no view. A quarter of a mile further on, up a steep, hill one comes to a path leading into a wood on the right; and following this path for a few hundred yards, along the high ridge of the hill, we reach all that is left of the castle of La Pommeraye. The influential masterpiece of one of the twentieth century’s most brilliant—and neglected—science fiction and horror writers, whom Stephen King called “the best writer of science fiction that England has ever produced.” “[Wyndham] avoids easy allegories and instead questions the relative values of the civilisation that has been lost, the literally blind terror of humanity in the face of dominant nature. . . . Frightening and powerful, Wyndham’s vision remains an important allegory and a gripping story.”—The Guardian What if a meteor shower left most of the world blind—and humanity at the mercy of mysterious carnivorous plants? Bill Masen undergoes eye surgery and awakes the next morning in his hospital bed to find civilization collapsing. Wandering the city, he quickly realizes that surviving in this strange new world requires evading strangers and the seven-foot-tall plants known as triffids—plants that can walk and can kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers.

"'In the spear-shaped tips of the trees, they breech their silence. Their faces peer out at me through English oaks and Burmese teak. Why did I relinquish them? I was never a Russian doll: it was me they harboured. They were still carrying me, pulling me deep into their mountainside of truth. There was a whole world inside there. They carve out, from the full moon in an English meadow, a silver spear for me. Now, the silver spear has become a Tibetan horse. She is running towards tomorrow.' Shalimar is a conjured place, but it is also an inheritance. A blend of nature-writing, magical realism and memoir, it is an incantation, but also a ship carrying a family safe inside, a sorrow-song and a fever dream. This book tells the story of Quinlivan's Anglo-Asian family whose extraordinary mythology haunts her own sense of time and place over the course of ten years and seven house moves through England, finally settling in rural Devon with a young family of her own. Quinlivan's story takes on an Odyssean cadence as she meets her grandmother in the form of a teak tree in Ireland, trepasses through a replica of Virgil's Tomb in a Lutyen's garden in Surrey and comes face to face with the Green Man beneath ancient oaks in Hampshire. This book is sure to make its home in the heart of anyone who has ever moved, or migrated, however major or minor in scale"--Publisher's description.
