He was educated at Belfast College, studied divinity at Highbury College, London, and at Princeton after his emigration in 1830; entered the Presbyterian ministry, and was pastor of the Second church at Charleston, S. C., from 1832. He made a number of contributions to the controversial and doctrinal literature of his communion, among them "Lectures on Apostolic Succession" (1840); "Ecclesiastical Catechism" (1841); "Presbytery and not Prelacy the Scriptural and Primitive Polity" (1844); "The History, Character, and Results of the Westminster Assembly" (1844); "Ruling Elders" (1845); "Rite of Confirmation" (1845); "Union to Christ and His Church" (1846); "The Unity of the Human Race" (1850); "Young Men's Christian Associations" (1857); "The True Origin and Source of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence," and several books of a devotional nature, or relating to missions. Mr. Smyth gathered a large library, received the degree of D.D. from Princeton in 1843, and died Aug. 20, 1873.
