Meg Pickel's older brother, Orion, has disappeared. One night, she steals out to look for him, and makes two surprising discoveries: She stumbles upon a séance that she suspects involves Orion, and she meets the author Charles Dickens, also unable to sleep, and roaming the London streets. He is a customer of Meg's father, who owns a print shop, and a family friend. Mr. Dickens fears that the children of London aren't safe, and is trying to solve the mystery of so many disappearances. If he can, then perhaps he'll be able to write once again. With stunning black-and-white illustrations by Greg Ruth, here is a literary mystery that celebrates the power of books, and brings to life one of the world's best-loved authors.

A spine-chilling play by Hugh Janes, based on several original ghost stories by Charles Dickens. In an ancient, crumbling mansion, sheltering from the howling winds that tear across the surrounding desolate moorland, two men stumble across a dark and terrifying secret that will change both of their lives. When a young book dealer, David Filde, is employed by a former associate of his uncle to catalogue a private library, he finds an incredible array of rare and antiquated books. But as a series of strange and unexplained events conspires to keep Filde from his work, he realises that if he is to convince his sceptical employer that the mysterious phenomena he is experiencing are real, they must journey together to the very edge of terror, and beyond... The play offers rich material for amateur theatre companies or student groups who want to introduce their audiences to another side of Dickens'' work - and have them jump out of their seats at the same time. ''"The Haunting" revels in the old-fashioned power of simple theatrical tricks, and basks in the shrieks and gasps of an audience that is clearly part of the event''- "Scotsman" ''Great pace and terrific suspense... guaranteed to raise goosebumps''- "Maidenhead Advertiser" ''Gripping... and fascinating too''- "British Theatre Guide"

A spooky house full of ghosts, a brother and sister as odd as the house itself, bizarre sounds and goings-on in the dark of the night. Who would want to live here? John and his sister Patty, that's who. The siblings boldly decide to live in the old manor house situated close to a railroad stop mid-way between Northern England and London. The house is dark and dreary, cold and full of rats and, of course, haunted. They invite a group of friends to come and occupy the house for three months just to 'see what happens.' Will they all survive their time there? These brilliant slightly sinister tales by Charles Dickens and a few other authors are all very different but each has its element of strangeness. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a widely popular English author and social critic. Among his most famous novels are ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘A Christmas Carol’, and ‘Great Expectations’. Dickens is best known for his depictions of poor Victorian living conditions and his unforgettable characters, some compassionate and others grotesquely malicious. Dickens’ timeless tales are still as celebrated today as when they were written, and his literary style is so influential that the term Dickensian was coined to describe the literature he inspired. Many of Dickens’ novels have been adapted for movies and television, including the Academy Award-winning musical ‘Oliver’. 'A Christmas Carol' is well known worldwide and is a huge favourite movie for families to watch together at Christmas time. The most famous movie was from Disney in 2009 starring Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth.

An interesting concept for an anthology of short stories, very unique! The introduction and setting of the Haunted House was creepy and funny, and created a vivid atmosphere for the stories, so that though they were extremely varied, they always hand an air of mystery, as well as a bridge between their widely differing genres and styles. The ending of the book fell a bit flat for me though, since the ghostly activity from the beginning of the book was never sufficiently resolved, and just seemed to vanish in the end without reason; instead, two couples got married and the author talked about the Bible. Maybe this made sense as a convention of literature at the time it was written, maybe to make it a happy ending or something, but at present, it threw an anticlimax at the end of a book that was really good and engaging in all other aspects. Aside from that, this book was highly entertaining and extremely memorable. The stories themselves are haunting and will stick with me for sometime to come! This is most definitely a book worth reading!

A Dickensian ghost story from the bestselling author of The Heart’s Invisible Furies and A Ladder to the Sky “A wonderfully creepy novel…magnificently eerie.” —The Observer This House Is Haunted is a striking homage to the classic nineteenth-century ghost story. Set in Norfolk in 1867, Eliza Caine responds to an ad for a governess position at Gaudlin Hall. When she arrives at the hall, shaken by an unsettling disturbance that occurred during her travels, she is greeted by the two children now in her care, Isabella and Eustace. There is no adult present to represent her mysterious employer, and the children offer no explanation. Later that night in her room, another terrifying experience further reinforces the sense that something is very wrong. From the moment Eliza rises the following morning, her every step seems dogged by a malign presence that lives within Gaudlin’s walls. Eliza realizes that if she and the children are to survive its violent attentions, she must first uncover the hall’s long-buried secrets and confront the demons of its past. Clever, captivating, and witty, This House Is Haunted is pure entertainment with a catch.
