Excerpt from The Guardian Angel If I called these two stories Studies of the Reflex Function in its higher sphere, I should frighten away all but the professors and the learned ladies. If I should proclaim that they were protests against the scholastic tendency to shift the total responsibility of all human action from the Infinite to the finite, I might alarm the jealousy of the cabinet-keepers of our doctrinal museums. By saying nothing about it, the large majority of those whom my book reaches, not being preface-readers, will never suspect anything to harm them beyond the simple facts of the narrative. Excerpt from Memoirs of a Guardian Angel This book is worthy of remark for other reasons. It shows that Catholicity is ever alive to the wants of the age. 't is not a thing of the past, but is always of the present. In this epoch, when super stition is tending, especially among us, to take the place of religion, the Church, in one of her sons, lays before all the true idea of that spiritual agency on our life, which no amount of stolid indifference or materialism can make as ignore. Again, this work will be useful to those Who have turned their attention to spiritism; it will show them what they are to believe, according to approved experience, and the dangers they are exposed to, in trifling With powers far beyond their control. Excerpt from The Guardian Angels: Or Friends in Heaven All was still. NO noise, no sound, save the low moan of little Alice, was heard within. Busy feet, on tip-toe, came and went, friends looked grief, yet spoke not, - but the tears that coursed each other quickly down the mother's pale, wan cheek, as she stood almost breathless, bending over her suffering child, too plainly told her anxious sorrow. At length the lids slowly unclosed, and the soft, blue eyes rested upon her mother. She smiled, - oh, that smile! The first for many, many long weeks! Then the mother wept tears of joy, as she thought that her child, her only one, might still live to be her solace in after years. Alas! Fond parent, thy hope is vain! Even now the guardian angel waits to take her to Him who gave her thee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Guardian Angel: A Poem in Three Books My object in this poem of the Guardian Angel, has been to illustrate the ministry of the holy angels as taught in the Sacred Scriptures: - especially in the following passages: Heb. I. 14. - The angels, "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?" Psalm XCI. 11. - "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." Rev. I. 1. - "He sent, and signified it by his angel." The poem consists of a series of conversations concerning the invisible state; the existence and ministry of holy angels, as well as their guardianship over man, held by persons who met accidentally at different places, connected by a slender thread of story. I have made use of "the dream" as a poetic device, keeping in mind that several of the most glorious revelations made to man by God were made in dreams. Excerpt from The Three Archangels and the Guardian Angels in Art Still, the devotion to the Guardian Angel is not merely an initiatory one; if intelligent it must be lifelong, this Guardian Angel being no myth, no phantom, but a living, ever-present reality, walking with us whether in crowds or in deserts, the adviser as well as the protector and friend, with whom we have daily, hourly, a more conscious inti macy, a more confidential intercourse. Excerpt from Our Guardian Angels The very word Angel means one who is sent, a messenger. And St. Paul expressly states that the specific mission of the angels is to minister to men who have not yet attained the Heavenly Kingdom: Are they not all minister ing spirits, sent to minister for them who shall receive the inheritance of salvation? (hebr. I, Yet these angels are of a higher order than we and by nature far more wonderfully endowed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
