Excerpt from The Groundwork of Eugenics This paper gives the substance of two lectures delivered as an introduction to a Course on the Science of National Eugenics at the Galton Laboratory, February 23 and March 2, 1909. It is published because the Staff of that Laboratory has found the need of some introduction to the science of Eugenics, which shall place the results of their investigations in a simple form before the layman. The aim of the present series of publications is to state the conclusions drawn from laborious statistical investigations and their bearing on national welfare in non-technical language suited to the general reader. Excerpt from Applied Eugenics The science of eugenics consists of a foundation of biology and a superstructure of sociology. Galton, its founder, em phasized both parts in due proportion. Until recently, how ever, most sociologists have been either indifferent or hostile to eugenics, and the science has been left for the most part in the hands Of biologists, who have naturally worked most on the foundations and neglected the superstructure. Although we are not disposed to minimize the importance of the biological part, we think it desirable that the means of applying the biological principles should be more carefully studied. The reader of this book will, consequently, find only a summary explanation of the mechanism of inheritance. Emphasis has rather been laid on the practical means by which society may encourage the re production of superior persons and discourage that of inferiors. Excerpt from Eugenics But it does not. Nor does eugenics propose to do violence in any other way to any humanitarian or Christian effort. Eugenics does not mean, as some have imagined, compulsory or government-made marriages. Some people have thought that eugenics was some half-baked scheme to breed the human race as we breed domestic animals, and to make a race of pug-noses or blond hair or blue eyes or any other fancy that some master of ceremonies should conceive. Nor does it mean a reduction in the proportion of love marriages. On the contrary, it means an increase of such marriages. Just as soon as men and women come to see and admire, as in ancient Greece, the ideal of physical perfection they will fall in love on that basis, as nature always intended that they should. There will be less interference with love marriages through ambition to acquire property or title. Eugenics is simply an application of modern science to improve the human race. "But," says the skeptic, "that will take millions of years!" Nevertheless, I reassert that it is easily practical to alter and improve the human race and to do so in a very short time. This Is The New Optimism Of Eugenics and it is based on solid evidence. Until recently no one realized how fast the race could improve if it would. Even Galton himself, when he first proposed eugenics, was under the impression that we inherit from our ancestors in a way which would make possible improvement extremely slow. He put forward as a theory (what we now know to be incorrect) that each child gets half of its nature from its parents, one quarter from its grandparents, one-eighth from its great grandparents, one-sixteenth from its great great grandparents, and so on indefinitely back, the sum total of those fractions being, when added up to infinity, just unity or the whole inheritance. Excerpt from Parenthood and Race Culture: An Outline of Eugenics Eugenics is not, for instance, a sub-section of applied mathematics. It is at once a science, and a religion. Based upon the laws of life, and recognising in them the foundation of society. We shall some day have a eugenic sociology, to which the first part of this vol ume seeks to contribute: and the sociology and poli tics which have not yet discovered that man is mortal will go to their own place. Excerpt from Readings in Evolution, Genetics, and Eugenics The one-man textbook is only too often written to emphasize the author's pet theories and is likely to be unduly biased. The present work is completely non-partisan. It consists Of the writ ings Of many authors and presents many diverse theories. The student is left to balance the various views one against another and to form his own judgment. It is very unfortunate, but none the less true, that even in these scientific days, the subject of evolution has a bad name in many communities and in many educational institutions with religious affiliations. The mistake is made of supposing that evolution and religion are diametrically opposed. The present writer has been at some pains to make it clear that evolution and religion are strictly compatible. We teachers of evolution in the colleges have no Sinister designs upon the religious faith Of our students.
