Excerpt from The Great Adventure Paul Dear, This is rather a special letter, for I am going to try to tell you about something that has happened to Dad and me, that has made life so wonderfully happy and joyous that we want you to share in it too. It is not easy to describe, Sonny, for it is one of those things like love and honour, that one Knows what they are, and yet it is so difficult to write a definition that would make anyone who didn't know understand. What Dad and I have found is the "Truth," and it has made us free, as Jesus said it would, and that is why we are so happy now. Does that sound a bit dull to you? It won't when you hear more about it, for it is just like being on a great adventure. But I had better begin at the beginning and tell you all about it. Excerpt from Lister's Great Adventure Dinner was over, and Cartwright occupied a chair on the lawn in front of the Canadian summer hotel. Automatic sprinklers threw sparkling showers across the rough, parched grass, the lake shimmered, smooth as oil, in the sunset, and a sweet, resinous smell drifted from the pines that rolled down to the water's edge. The straight trunks stood out against a background of luminous red and green, and here and there a slanting beam touched a branch with fire. Natural beauty had not much charm for Cartwright, who was satisfied to loaf and enjoy the cool of the evening. He had, as usual, dined well, his cigar was good, and he meant to give Mrs. Cartwright half an hour. Clara expected this, and, although he was sometimes bored, he indulged her when he could. Besides, it was too soon for cards. The lights had not begun to spring up in the wooden hotel, and for the most part the guests were boating on the lake. When he had finished his cigar it would be time to join the party in the smoking-room. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from His Great Adventure Thus he proceeded for several blocks, never raising his head, stopping mechanically at the street crossings, resuming his discouraged pace as the crowd moved on. Once he plunged his hand into his coat pocket, to assure himself of some possession, and then withdrew it with a bitter smile for his unconscious anxiety. When in this vacant promenade he had reached the lower part of the avenue, where the crowd was less dense, and less gay and rich in appearance, he lifted his head and looked musingly into the misty space before him. Excerpt from My Greatest Adventure, Vol. 25 It came in a very ordinary way, Just as a tele phone call. I was sitting in my office one Monday afternoon, when my telephone bell rang, and a voice said: Can you be ready to go to France on Saturday? We are sending out a concert party to entertain the soldiers. We have already a quar tette of two ladies and two gentlemen singers, a violinist and a pianist, and we are just short of a well - a comic turn! I We have already had a con jurer, a ventriloquist, and an elocutionist, and now the boys are wanting a change. One of them has written from France to say: 'try and get hold of Ada Ward and her blackboard, and send her along.' Within half an hour of receiving that telephone message, I was being interviewed by Miss Lena Ashwell, a brilliant English actress, who is the very soul of this great work of entertaining our troops on active service. My only previous acquaintance with her had been as a distant admirer on this side the footlights. It was good to meet her face to face and to find her a gracious, charming and loving woman, as well as a clever actress. Excerpt from An Awfully Big Adventure It was my original intention to gather this miscellaneous assortment of war sketches and stories together under the heading of "A Scran Bag." The aptness of this title will be apparent when it is explained that odds and ends of personal possessions left lying about the mess decks of a man-of-war are impounded by the Ship's Police and kept for safe custody in a sack. This receptacle of random gleanings is called the Scran Bag. My publishers agreed that the title was admirable - to the initiated. They opined, however, that the bulk of the public would be left, so to speak, cold. They reminded me that it was no use explaining it in a Preface, since no one reads Prefaces. They intimated that life was a sordid business, and we all have to make our livings - in short, no book with such a title would sell. I therefore turned to the classics, and in "Peter Pan" found a title which, I think, is comprehensive of any record, however fragmentary and incomplete, whether bald fact or fact sugared with fiction, of the Navy's share in this War. Excerpt from The Pathway of Adventure Stuart Wayne had taken a day from work in which to celebrate his good fortune. The early mail that mom ing had brought to his bachelor-apartments in the Cres senden Building a very substantial check - the first royalty returns on his new book - accompanied by an exceedingly pleasant letter written by his publishers in New York, stating that the work was enjoying an excel lent sale. As this was the first time he had succeeded in achieving any popular demand Wayne felt entitled to a brief vacation. However, his methods were naturally quiet ones. He had not resided in Chicago for any great length of time, scarcely long enough to become habituated to the city, or to form a wide circle of acquaintances. Indeed, outside of certain professional friendships, and a few old-tims chums, encountered by chance at the University Club, he scarcely felt that he really knew any one.
