Excerpt from Day Dawn, or the Gospel in Type and Prophecy The prefaces oi' the former editions of this work express its general scope and the object of sending it forth. These are still the same; and the ten years since its htat publication have given many evidences that the great system of Bible truth which it presents is well adapted to secure the object desired - to bring light and joy to otherwise dark and sad hearts. How very many have given expression of gratitude to God that in answer to prayer for more light on his Word and the des tiny of mankind, the day Dsws came to them! Such testimonies have been a great encouragement to the writer, and with the continued demand for the book, have been the motive in preparing this third edition. First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

"Should this book be the means of lifting up some weary, despondent soul, or succeed in turning some sinner from the error of his way, or helping some deceived one out of his deception, or inspiring some fallen one to a truer, nobler life, I shall be many, many times repaid for my labor, and shall indeed give God the glory." Christianity is not a mere profession, but a principle. Every being is possessed with a principle. Satan has a principle; Christ has a principle which is termed Christianity. When this Christ principle is instilled into man's soul by the Spirit of God he becomes a Christian. Now Christ was the truth. Then the Christ nature or principle is according to the truth, whether it be in Christ or man. We have only then to lift up the whole truth, which by the wisdom and grace of God we shall do in this work, which will reveal true Christianity and expose every imposition. In The Gospel Day Charles E. Orr unveils the character of Christianity. From Christianity as a Light to Sin and Salvation, the Soul, Divine Healing, Evil Habits and Injurious Indulgences, Scriptural Predictions and more. If you are interested in growing as a Christian or have questions about Christianity The Gospel Day will be an important addition to your reading.

Excerpt from A Commentary on the Gospels for the Sundays and Other Holy Days of the Christian Year IN the Gospel appointed for the preceding Sunday we have an instance of the power of Christ in raising the dead; in the Gospel for this Sunday we have His mercifulness and power shown in healing the body of the diseased: at the same time, as though to teach us that those things which hinder the healing of the soul, and raising the sinner from the death of sin, are harder to remove than corporeal sick ness and the reanimation of a dead body, the dropsical man leaves the presence of Christ wholly freed from disease, whilst the Pharisees remain bound with the chain of their Coster. Excerpt from The Saviour in the Newer Light: A Present-Day Study of Jesus Christ One cause of offence, doubtless, was the free criticism of the New Testament documents. A sentiment seemed generally to assert itself, which drew a distinction between the gospels and even the rest of the Bible, regarding them as the one ground which ought to be secured from any intrusion that might disturb the mind of the ordinary worshipper. Another matter, however, which plainly offended was the attempting, however reverently, on the part of a minister of the Church, to trace a development of human thought and human purpose in Him to whom the Church had for so many centuries ascribed the being of the Second Person in the Godhead. In vain had I, in the preface and the last chapter, claimed that the course of the study was not opposed to the essentials of the Church's doctrine, that the complete human nature of Jesus had all along been asserted by the Church, and that the conception of the Divinity of Jesus was not opposed to but seen through the humanity of Jesus. In vain also did I, when the Case commenced, seek opportunity for a direct presentation and a separate estimation of the plea on which I hoped to justify my action, namely an appeal to the disavowal by the early Church of such views as denied a complete human nature on the part of Jesus. The course of procedure which was required in the Case proved not to admit of such a free and full investigation as I had hoped for. Only at the second General Assembly was I successful in presenting what I considered to be an untrammelled defence of my position; and this late defence, allowed "ex gratia," was for technical reasons found not admissible for consideration by my judges. The book stood condemned by the General Assembly of 1896 as subversive of the doctrine of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
