In the present volume the author has attempted to systematise the knowledge existing as to the properties of the working fluid of the Intemal - Combustion Engine, whether using gas, petrol, or heavy oil, so as to enable the engineer and inventor to consider not only mechanical modifications of engine construction, but more profound alterations possible by varying the actions going on in the working fluid. Such variations are, in the author's opinion, necessary to enable light and powerful internal-combustion Engines to be developed for marine work. For this purpose it is necessary that the engineer should be thoroughly familiar with the properties of the working fluid with which he is dealing.
