Excerpt from Polo Mr. E. D. Miller says in Modern Polo, Although it is manifest that we should have at our fingers' ends the rules under which we play, many even good players who have played the game for years, are marvellously ignorant on the subject of rules, on account of being too lazy or too indifferent to learn them from the book, which is the only accurate way by which to acquire that knowledge. Excerpt from As to Polo I made his position on the team and, as a result, got into many matches and had the advantage of having three trained men, who had played together for years, holding their posts and keeping me to mine. Credit for this good team play and consequent suc cess was wholly due to the admirable captaincy of that noble sportsman, Samuel Dennis Warren, of Boston. It is much easier to start right than to unlearn a fault to which one has become habituated. If be fore beginning to play, the player learns to start the stroke from the perpendicular, for example, and to bring his mallet up to the perpendicular again, making one complete circle, he will avoid an error most pernicious in its results, which mars the play of a number of players - that is, carrying the stick at any angle or starting the stroke with the head of the mallet near the ground which, while not al ways fatal, is inimical to good hitting. It seems a pity that any player should ever begin polo with out learning how to hold his mallet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Game of Polo Dear Watson, It is only just that this book should be inscribed to you, since but for you it would never have been written. Had you consented to the wish expressed by many of your friends that you should write, out of the fulness of your knowledge and experience, a treatise on the game of polo, I at all events should never have ventured on the task. Tint even though you have refused the labour, the credit of this book must still be yours, for what knowledge of Polo I have is derived from your precept, and, still more, from your play of the game of which you are a master, and, in its modern form at least, the creator. Should this book take its place on the shelves of polo players beside the writings of "Dooker" and E. D. Miller, it will be a pleasure to me to think that it may recall to the minds of a future generation of players how much you did for the game and how brilliant a practical exponent of your own precepts you were. Excerpt from Water Polo It was not for this reason, as may be easily imagined, that the game was first promoted, but merely for the purpose of providing something new and attractive in aquatic sports; and with this view, on May 12, 1870, a committee was appointed by the London Swim ming Association, to draw up a code of rules for the management Of the game of foot ball in the water. Prior to 1870, various attempts were made by individual swimmers to arrange some kind of ball game in the water, and at many entertainments and swimming matches what was termed water hand ball was played, the sides usually consisting of not more than three players. Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war.
