Strangeness has been shown to be important for the understanding of the so-called missing resonances. Due to the scarce experimental data in strangeness photoproduction on the neutron, phenomenological models such as coupled-channels analyses resort to certain approximations that do not allow getting either accuracy or agreement between different analyses when extracting resonance parameters. Thus, in order to obtain high-quality data on the neutron channels, a new experiment (designated g13), based on a liquid deuterium target and a polarized photon beam (both circular and linear polarization) covering from threshold to 2.3 GeV has been done at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. In this paper, a brief description of the g13 experiment is given.

Preliminary measurements of the quasi-free differential cross sections of the gD -->pp-(p), gD --> K*(892)0L(p), and gD --> K+S*(1385)-(p) reactions are shown using data from the Jefferson Lab Hall B CLAS g13 experiment. No experimental cross section data have yet been published on gD --> K*(892)0L(p), and the only published cross section data on gD --> K+S*(1385)-(p) are at forward angles, where t-channel K+ and K*+ exchanges are predicted to dominate. These data can be used to contribute to the search for the "missing" N* resonances, some of which are predicted to have non-negligible couplings to the excited strangeness channels. These cross sections are shown to be sizable compared to the ground-state channels, indicating that it is important to include excited channels in coupled-channels analyses used to extract the N* resonances. In addition, the gD --> pp-(p) data provide a significant increase to the world statistics, and will be used to study rescattering effects within the deuteron.

Theoretical studies suggest that experimental observables for hyperon production reactions can place stringent constraints on the free parameters of hyperon-nucleon potentials, which are critical for the understanding of hypernuclear matter and neutron stars. Here we present preliminary experimental results for the polarization observables S, Py, Ox, Oz, Cx, and Cz for final-state interactions (FSI) in exclusive L photoproduction off the deuteron. The observables were obtained from data collected during the E06-103 (g13) experiment with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The g13 experiment ran with unpolarized deuteron target and circularly- and linearly-polarized photon beams with energies between 0.5 GeV and 2.5 GeV and collected about 51010 events with multiple charged particles in the final state. To select the reaction of interest, the K+ and the L decay products, a proton and a negative pion, were detected in the CLAS. The missing-mass technique was used to identify exclusive hyperon photoproduction events. Final-state interaction events were selected by requesting that the reconstructed neutron has a momentum larger than 200 MeV/c. The large statistics of E06-103 provided statistically meaningful FSI event samples, which allow for the extraction of one- and two-fold differential single- and double-polarization observables. Here we present preliminary results for a set of six observables for photon energies between 0.9 GeV and 2.3 GeV and for several kinematic variables in the Ln center-of-mass frame. Our results are the very first estimates of polarization observables for FSI in hyperon photoproduction and will be used to constrain the free parameters of hyperon-nucleon potentials.

Excited states of hadrons are essential for understanding confinement and non-perturbative QCD. Constituent quark models are successful in describing the first excited nucleon (N *) states in each partial wave, but predict more states than have been observed experimentally. Diquark correlations have been suggested as one explanation for these â missingâ states. Recent advances in both theory (coupled-channels calculations) and experiment (high-statistics polarization measurements) offer new tools for resolving this question. The g13 experiment at Jefferson Lab, completed in June 2007, forms an important part of this effort. It used linearly and circularly polarized photons and a deuteron target to study N * states produced on the neutron, primarily through their decays into kaons and hyperons. The self-analyzing property of the? is ideally suited for this purpose. The general nature and exceptional size of the data set will, however, produce a wide range of results, including opening.
