Is it time for traditional hotels to check out? As one of the world's most established industries, the hotel sector has remained relatively unchanged and unchallenged for decades. Yet traditional hotels have recently come under increasing pressure on two major fronts: from disruptors in the sharing economy such as Airbnb, and by a rising wave of modern consumers who have become re-educated by social media and hotel comparison websites. Can this traditionally slow-moving sector reinvent itself or will it become increasingly marginalized? Is it time for traditional hotels to check out? Increasing numbers of hoteliers believe that traditional hotels are on the brink of a resurgence in popularity. Global hotel chains are catching up to modern trends – adding technologized curation and personalisation to their offerings. In Checking Out, Katherine Doggrell interviews key figures in the hotel industry and draws upon various case studies to explore the ways in which this traditionalist industry can remain relevant in the 21st century. The hotel 'experience' has been redefined, as guests now value fast Wi-Fi and mobile check-ins over room service and mini-fridges. Checking Out is an engaging investigation into the unprecedented challenges that face the hotel sector in the digital era and the strategies that are being employed by its leaders and innovators.

This essay sheds light on the future of the hotel industry, explicates how advanced technologies can revolutionize the hotel industry, and demystifies the benefits of companies leveraging robots in the hotel industry. The future of the hotel industry will not only be characterized by dynamism as it continues to metaphorically evolve, but will also be eminently auspicious for competitors in the hotel industry. Technological advancements have profoundly changed the hotel industry and have rendered it all the more technology-driven. The hotel industry shows no signs of contracting anytime in the imminent future. More hotel businesses are apt to become automated hotel businesses in the pending future. More hotel businesses are also apt to leverage advanced technologies in the pending future to not only streamline their business operations, but to also enhance the customer experience. In the coming years, more hotel companies will be apt to allow “mobile check-ins” (Lally, n.d.) to transpire at their hotels. Furthermore, in the coming years, more hotel companies will also be apt to have voiced-controlled technologies and smartphone-controlled technologies inside of their guestrooms. In order to win over more customers, more hotel companies can offer enticing loyalty programs, more luxurious guestrooms, and more robust hotel amenities. By winning over more customers, hotels companies can further amplify their sales revenue and profits. In order to significantly reduce their overhead costs, hotel companies can leverage LED light bulbs and can utilize “automated lighting fixtures” (Lally, n.d.) which can help them to significantly reduce their electricity costs. By significantly reducing their exorbitant electricity costs, hotel companies cannot only reduce their electricity usage, but can also concomitantly reap a higher profit margin. “The lighting scenes” (Lally, n.d.) at hotels can “reduce energy usage by being set to ‘off’ as often as possible. For example, a sensor can activate them by detecting when a guest walks into a room, or the lights can be set to turn on and off based on the time of day or even the sunset” (Lally, n.d.). Customer not only relish indulging in “the automated experience” (Lally, n.d.) that hotels provide, but the hotel company also reaps a major cost-savings benefit from furnishing an automated experience to customers. “All of the devices in the guest rooms can be controlled from the master system so that nothing is running when it should not be running. Keeping several hundred light bulbs off and thermostats down makes a huge difference in energy consumption” (Lally, n.d.) and can help hotel companies to maximize their profits. Hotel companies should not overlook the eminent importance of embracing technologies and minimizing their electricity usage. In the coming decades, more hotels companies will be keen on taking the requisite measures to minimize their energy wastage. The future of the hotel industry is apt to usher in more personalized experiences for customers. “Personalization is becoming so important because hotel guests now expect hotel rooms to feel like home. With the rise of big data and social media, hotels now are able to gather the data necessary to offer guests a more personalized experience. For example, guests often change the temperature of a hotel room to their personal preference. Moreover, some hoteliers are considering such hyper-personalized technology offerings, such as beds that adjust firmness to guest preferences, automatic coffee makers with built-in WiFi to provide weather and news updates, or even biometric bathroom tiles that report on a guest’s health. These types of personalized touches could become mainstream in the next few years” (Escobar, 2018). In the coming years, more hotel businesses are not only apt to offer more amenities that will enrich the customer experience, but are also at a high probability to become highly technology-driven businesses in the coming decades to be able to provide a more personalized customer experience that offers even more luxuries to customers. In the coming years, customers will be apt to the option to further customize their guestroom experience beyond the ambit of controlling the temperature and lighting of the guestrooms. For instance, “the Hilton hotel chain announced that it will soon allow guests to upload their own artwork and photos to automatically display in their room” (Escobar, 2018).
