A recent construction project in Singapore involved a Russian plant, a Japanese management team, Australian and Italian engineers, Thai steel workers and a labour force from throughout Asia ... The recent growth explosion of multi-nationals and the lowering of trade barriers is pushing the globalization of construction at a startling pace. Mark Mawhinney has brought together for the first time, advice, information and evidence on this developing arena from a wide range of sources. This book offers a clear understanding of the international construction market and an explanation of what knowledge is required to operate successfully in it. It also helps readers become familiar with some of the analytical tools available. Drawing on both contractor and consultant case studies and including a practical 'hints and signposts' section, International Construction provides a lively and informed introduction for construction professionals moving into international work.

Download R&D Investment and Impact in the Global Construction Industry Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
R&D Investment and Impact in the Global Construction Industry brings together contributions from leading industry researchers in a diverse group of countries to investigate the role of research and development (R&D) in the construction industry. Investment in R&D is a proven factor in economic growth, and helps develop a more productive and innovative industry. This book explores how policy makers and industry leaders can better target future investment; and how industry and researchers can manage their efforts to improve productivity whilst addressing the environmental and social needs of their communities. Case studies present projects where R&D ideas funded by both the private and public sectors have been translated from research into practice or policy, and examine drivers, successes and barriers to the delivery of R&D in industry. Based on research from members of the CIB Task Group 85 (R&D Investment and Impact) and concluding with key insights for maximising the impact of R&D in the future, the book holds valuable lessons for practitioners, policy makers and researchers across the international construction industry.

Download Sustainable Development and the Future of Construction Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This project aimed to answer the following question: "What will be the consequences of sustainable development on the construction industry by the years 2010?" The study focused on investigating the relationship, and clearly defining the links, between the principles of sustainable development and the construction sector. The (Kibert) definition for sustainable construction: "the creation and responsible management of a healthy built environment based on resource efficient and ecological principles" was taken as a starting point in 1995 when the project was launched. The objective was to interpret and describe its meaning in different participating countries and, if appropriate, to give it a better definition from their national point of view. The project has involved the collaboration of experts from countries in Western and Eastern Europe, North America, South Africa and Asia, with the objective of producing this CIB publication in time for the CIB Gavle Congress. The publication resulting from this project comprises fourteen national reports and an international synthesis, which give a comparison between visions from various countries on what comprises the notion of "sustainable construction".
