Bishop Looney writes that there is no nobler calling than the ministry. Pastors interact with peoples' lives at their highest and lowest moments. Pastors point beyond themselves to God and seek to be a bridge between the human and divine. While our work is serious and life-changing, we can never take ourselves too seriously. In fact, the load of ministry might be too heavy to bear without the ability to laugh at oneself and with colleagues. It is freeing to realize that Jesus must have laughed heartily. Think of the humorous way Jesus critiques the religious leaders and others of his day. One was so eager to be noticed that he hired a trumpet player to announce a large gift. Others loved to pray piously on the street corners to be seen and applauded. Still others sought seats up front where everyone would surely notice. If it is recognition you want, that will be your reward. We have so elevated the divine Jesus that we have forgotten the humor of Jesus, who was accused of being a party animal and friend of sinners and who laughingly reminded them of the absurdity of criticizing a doctor for associating with sick people. For some reason, I have been given the kind of mind that can see and remember the humorous in my own life and in my service to the church. Some of that, I choose to share here, hoping that you will discover the humor in your own life and circumstances. Maybe our joy will attract others to the joy given by Christ.

Author Luke Reynolds’s humorous and heart-warming contemporary novel, The Looney Experiment, chronicles one boy’s journey through bullying, first love, and an up-close examination of the meaning of courage. Atticus Hobart couldn’t feel lower. He’s in love with a girl who doesn’t know he exists, he is the class bully’s personal punching bag, and to top it all off, his dad has just left the family. Into this drama steps Mr. Looney, a 77-year-old substitute English teacher with uncanny insight and a most unconventional approach to teaching. But Atticus soon discovers there’s more to Mr. Looney’s methods than he’d first thought. And as Atticus begins to unlock the truths within his own name, he finds that his hyper-imagination can help him forge his own voice, and maybe—just maybe—discover that the power to face his problems was inside him all along.

One of hockeyÕs most colourful characters, from hockeyÕs most colourful era, tells all Gilles Gratton was not a typical pro hockey player. He refused to don his equipment and man his net if the planets were not properly aligned. He skated naked at practice. He created one of hockeyÕs most famous goalie masks based on his astrological sign. He fought with coaches and management, speaking his mind to his detriment. Sex, drugs, and rock ÕnÕ roll ruled his life, not stopping pucks. Truthfully? He never really wanted to be an NHL goaltender; he wanted to be Tibetan monk. And so, he quit hockey to seek enlightenment. Now, in his autobiography, Gratton teams up with author Greg Oliver to tell his wild and at times, yes, loony story: from his early days in Montreal, where his brother Norm Gratton became an NHL player, too; through his stints with the OHAÕs Oshawa Generals, the Ottawa Nationals and Toronto Toros of the rogue WHA, and the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers in the NHL.

Looney Tunes cartoons, writes celebrated television critic Jaime Weinman, are the high-water mark of American filmed comedy. Surreal, irreverent, philosophical, and riotously funny, they have maintained their power over audiences for generations and inspired such giants of the cinema as Mel Brooks, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas. Here, finally, Weinman gives Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, Sylvester, and the whole cast of animated icons their long-awaited due. With meticulous research, he takes us inside the Warners' studio to unlock the mystery of how an unlikely band of directors and artists working in the shadow of Walt Disney created a wild, visually stunning and oh-so-violent brand of comedy that has never been matched for sheer volume of laughs. The result is an unexpected and fascinating story that matches the Looney Tunes themselves for energy, humor, and ingenuity.
