Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Magazine, 1854, Vol. 2 We have, indeed, no discouraging remarks to ofl'er on the state of the Craft in general, but, as its kindly recognised interpreter as the almost sole medium of its intercommunica tion either with its own members or with those who 'have not yet tasted the cup of its mysteries - we venture, in all brotherly feeling, to say our say, and perhaps to grumble a little, at a few matters at which we feel every real working and upright Mason is as indignant as ourselves. Excerpt from The Freemasons' Monthly Magazine, 1854, Vol. 13 We may be assured that a small Lodge, composed of worthy and excellent members, honorable, high minded and virtuous in their principles, faithful work men, and desirous of carrying into the world the spitit of our Institution, is far preferable and much more honored by the public, than a F raternity made up of a swarm, some of whom have no character in the community, and whose sole object was not to improve themselves in Masonry, but to promote their own in tercet or ambition. Had such caution always been used, we should never per haps, meet with decayed, degenerate M asons, from whose frailties we are obliged from sell-respect, to turn away with a blush, or in some cases with a tear. Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Magazine and Review, 1850 As it has already 'been announced 11; the circular, calling attention to 'the Appearance 'of the freeuasons' quarterly magazine and review, the primary design of the Work is to supply valuable and important information to the Craft, and to make it, as far as possible, the organ of the Order. In these days of progression it is impossible that Masonryr can stand still. It must advance in usefulness with the movements of the times, with which its principles must be identified and its practices interwoven, if Stability to order, adhesion to integrity, and preservation of the light of truth are to be preserved. Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Review, Vol. 14: March 31, 1847 With these remarks I return to the subject of the hieroglyphics. The language of the ancient Egyptians was ancient Coptic, and it is somewhat remarkable that this language ceased to be orally practised among the modern Copts about a century since. Arabic gradually superseded it, and the sat speaker of Coptic died about seventy years ago. The ancient language is still, however, read in the churches of the Coptic community, with Arabic translations. Had it been entirely lost, the art of deciphering the hieroglyphics, and the important results which have been detailed as owing from that circumstance, would have been lost to the world for ever. Excerpt from The Freemasons' Monthly Magazine, 1857, Vol. 16 The above is from the report of the committee of correspondence in the Grand Lodge of California, presented at the late annual communica tion of that Grand Body and is predicated on the address of the Grand Master 01' the Grand Lodge of this Commonwealth, December, 1855. The remark that btttfour reports were, in that year, received from the Dis triet Deputy Grand Masters, is certainly warranted by the terms of the address, and yet it docs not present the fact as it actually stood. 11 might have failed to do ao, had the precise words of the address been given, namely, l have received written reports from only four of the ten Dis triet Deputy Grand Masters. The reports referred to by the Grand Master were special and detailed reports, which he had, the year previous, requested the Deputies to make for his personal use, that he might thereby be enabled to lay before the Grand Lodge in his annual communication, more precise and particular information than he could otherwise do. Four only of the Deputies had complied with this request, in season for his purpose. It was this emission to which he referred, and intended to reprove. The usual reports and returns had, however, been made by all the Deputies before the address was delivered. But these did not give the details he wanted and had asked for. Excerpt from The Freemasons' Quarterly Review, Vol. 3: 1845 Ive had intended to have entered into many subjects at some length, but the interest excited by the leading articles in our three last numbers has led to the transmission Of so many papers and reports, that we have been obliged, not only to extend the letter-press very considerably, and to encroach on our own space, but also to vary the type from the larger to the smaller size, in order to give room for several papers. Our present leader, therefore, will necessarily be limited accordingly. Shall the Freemasons' Quarterly be Changed to a Monthly Review? The arguments in favour Of such a change, have been warmly advocated by our readers in Edinburgh, Dublin, Oxford, Birmingham, Manchester and other places, but as no plan has been suggested to meet the consequent increased expenses, we must abide the event of the current year, when, if the prospect is sufficiently encouraging, the propriety Of a change shall be duly considered. The Additional Contributions to Grand Lodge - After two years' talking against time, this motion was carried by a considerable majority. There may be some who consider that the provinces should only be amerced in half contributions - but as it is proved that they fully share in the benefit, it is surely but right that they should share equally in the honour. It was a rare circumstance, that for the first time in our recollection it was thought necessary to direct an especial notice to be served on the provinces, notifying the motion, that they might not be taken by surprise. We, who work for the provinces, have a better Opinion Of them than to anticipate their objection to some provision for the widows of Freemasons, and look forward with con fidence to a confirmation of the minutes of the last Grand Lodge.
