This is part IV of “The Country Dance Book”, a classic guide to country dance containing instructions for 43 different dances. Written in simple, clear language and profusely illustrated, this timeless volume is not to be missed by country dancers new and old, and it would make for a fantastic addition to allied collections. Contents include: “The Dance”, “The Room”, “Technical Terms and Symbols”, “The Music”, “Steps”, “The Figures”, “The Hey”, “General Instructions”, “Notation”, “Put on thy Smock on a Monday (Round for Six)”, “The Gelding of the Devil”, “Oaken Leaves”, “Sellenger's Round, or, The Beginning of the World”, “Hit and Miss”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction on folk music.

Although much of the material in this manual is borrowed from the dance writings of Charles Durang, it remains an important source for the study of mid-nineteenth-century ballroom dance. Unlike other contemporary writers, Ferrero devotes more than eighty pages to the origins of dance and a history of European and Native American dance. The remaining part of the manual concerns ballroom etiquette and descriptions of numerous dances including the quadrille, waltz, polka, schottisch, varsovienne, polka mazurka, and galop. Ferrero gives directions for more than eighty figures of the cotillon, a group dance performed as a series of party games. Some of the figures include "The scarf," "The glass of wine," "The sea during a storm," "The four chairs," and "The rounds thwarted." The manual concludes with music for twenty-three dances.

In this new edition of a modern classic, Thomas Howard contrasts the Christian and secular worldviews, refreshing our minds with the illuminated vision of reality that inspired the world in times past and showing us that we cannot live meaningful lives without it. Howard explains in clear and beautiful prose the way materialism robs us of beauty, depth, and truth. With laser precision and lyrical ponderings he takes us through the dismal reductionist view of the world to the shimmering significance of the world as sign and sacrament. More timely now than when it was first written, this book is a prophetic examination of modern society's conscience.
