Excerpt from The Foundations of Economics In the year 1885, under the influence of Carlyle and llushin, I set myself to investigate the Condi tion-of-england-question, and with what I now see to have been singular good fortune I began on the problem of over-production. Is over-production the cause of Hard Times? I have come to a solution of that. Which satisfies myself. And while doing so I have had to recast most of the economic formulae. Some of them I have attached as untrue. Others I have replaced by new definitions, which seem to me to go a little deeper into the truth. Austrian Economics Re-examined: The Economics of Time and Ignorance is an expanded version of the 1996 edition of The Economics of Time and Ignorance. This work is a classic statement of the role of subjectivism, radical uncertainty and change through real time in Austrian economics specifically, and in modern economics more generally. The new book contains the full text and Introductions of the earlier edition as well as the comprehensive previously-unpublished essay "What is Austrian Economics?" and a new Introduction. The essay is a comprehensive overview of the central themes of the book from a somewhat different perspective than in the book itself. It supplements the analysis in the book. The new Introduction explains that the 2007-8 financial crisis and recent developments in behavioural economics have made the book more relevant than ever before. Austrian Economic Re-examined develops and systematizes the fundamental principles of the Austrian tradition to the analysis of rational expectations, business cycles, monetary theory competition and monopoly, and capital theory. Excerpt from Elementary Economics There never was a time when men needed to think so seriously about the problems of national welfare as the present. It is plainer than ever that this is an economic question, that is, a question of economizing. It is the purpose of this book to examine the economic foundations of our national welfare and to point out some of the simpler and more direct methods of strengthening these foundations, to the end that our nation and all nations that aim at democracy and justice may prosper more and more. What effects do laws have? Do individuals drive more cautiously, clear ice from sidewalks more diligently, and commit fewer crimes because of the threat of legal sanctions? Do corporations pollute less, market safer products, and obey contracts to avoid suit? And given the effects of laws, which are socially best? Such questions about the influence and desirability of laws have been investigated by legal scholars and economists in a new, rigorous, and systematic manner since the 1970s. Their approach, which is called economic, is widely considered to be intellectually compelling and to have revolutionized thinking about the law. In this book Steven Shavell provides an in-depth analysis and synthesis of the economic approach to the building blocks of our legal system, namely, property law, tort law, contract law, and criminal law. He also examines the litigation process as well as welfare economics and morality. Aimed at a broad audience, this book requires neither a legal background nor technical economics or mathematics to understand it. Because of its breadth, analytical clarity, and general accessibility, it is likely to serve as a definitive work in the economic analysis of law.

Walter Eucken s "The Foundations of Economics" (Grundlagen der National-konomie) is the classic work of German econo- mic literature in thepast 60 years. In particular, the book was of great importance for the economic order that developed in the Federal Republic of Germany after the Second World War and made Germany the leading economic power in Europe. Eucken places great emphasis on economic reality in his work. Taking everyday observations as his starting point, he attempts to infer complex connections. Eucken provides the reader not only with a comprehensive criticism of classical economics, but also in particular with an analysis of economic systems, economic order, and the course of economic events. As a consequence of the dramatic changes that have taken place in Eastern Europe, many states now find themselves facing problems similar to those faced by West Germany in its earliest days. Euckens considerations can be of assistance in the search for the correct concepts. This reprint of the English translation of Euckens book thus not only gives a broad readership renewed access to a classical work, but can be instrumental in supporting the transition to a market economy in many countries and in facilitating the search for good concepts.

Excerpt from The Foundations of Indian Economics Professor mukerjee honours me by his wish that I should write the introduction to his volume and I willingly attempt this. As an eager reader, and even an old reviewer of books on India, I can honestly invite others to follow him through the villages and fields, and into the homes and work shops to which he leads us, and of which he has so much to tell. Since the appearance of The Web of Indian Life, by his and my old friend Sister Nivedita, I know of no such further and fuller volume, again sympathetic and suggestive and now detailed and practical, even reconstructive. Excerpt from Economic Foundations of Society Modern sociologists are still groping about for a point of departure from which to explain the complex of social phenomena. It was easier for the philosophers of the last century, for all were then agreed that Society was to be "rightly constituted by victorious Analysis." But Philosophism has had its day, and Positivism now reigns in the domain of social science. We no longer hope to reconstitute society upon a fabulous state of nature; we are seeking now to discover the natural laws of social evolution. On the one side there are the biological sociologists who would determine the principles of the new science by analogies drawn from the animal world. But it is not enough merely to substitute super-organic for organic evolution, and proceed at once to confer biological definitions upon sociological facts. True, the terminology of the science is thereby enriched and its methods somewhat improved; but the principles peculiar to social growth still remain to be discovered. There is also a group of psychological sociologists who seek the motives of collective life in the individual instincts of the man. But personal proclivities are so largely the result of historical inheritance and the social environment, that there is constant danger in pursuing this method of confusing cause with consequence, and thus becoming involved in a vicious circle. It is difficult, besides, without some guiding principle, to hit upon instincts that are especially characteristic of the human species, and at the same time sufficiently original and universal to apply to all social phenomena. Excerpt from Foundations of Political Economy "England is full of wealth, of multifarious produce, supply for human want in every kind - yet England is dying of inanition. With unabated bounty the land of England blooms and grows; waving with yellow harvests; thick-studded with workshops, industrial implements, with fifteen millions of workers, understood to be the strongest, the cunningest, and the willingest our earth ever had; these men are here, the work they have done, the fruit they have realised is here, abundant, exuberant on every hand of us; and behold some baleful fiat as of Enchantment has gone forth, saying, 'Touch it not, ye master-workers, ye master-idlers;none of you can touch it, no man of you shall be the better for it; this is enchanted fruit.'" - Thomas Carlyle (Past and Present).
