"There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." So said Hamlet, but for some strange reason Christians seem to have bought this reductionistic view of the world. Have we forgotten the Bible? Our modern cosmology suggests that the universe can be explained through astronomy and mathematics. But this seems far too simplistic, not to mention rather dull. Are stars angels? Do satyrs truly exist? What does a seraph look like? Can demons tell the future? What does God's creation contain beyond the visible realm? In the following essays, such questions are not peremptorily dismissed, but are engaged with on the basis of what can be found in the Bible. We are not living in a world that can be easily dissected in a laboratory. Our universe is filled with intelligence and life, and the creativity behind it can only be understood fully through the Creator. This book includes essays from Evan and Douglas Wilson, Chris Schlect, Wes Callihan, and others.

One of the most significant events in the history of Western civilization was the cosmological revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Among the most salient factors in this change, described by Alexandre Koyré as the ‘destruction of the cosmos’ inherited from ancient Greece, were Copernican heliocentrism and the substitution of a homogeneous universe for the hierarchical cosmos of the Platonic and Aristotelian tradition. Starting with a new approach to the issue of the presence of Islamic astronomical devices in Copernicus’ work and a thorough reappraisal of the cosmological views of Paracelsus, the book deals mainly with the abolition of cosmological dualism and the ways in which it affected the decline of astrology over the 17th century. Other related topics include planetary order and theories of world harmony, the cause of planetary motion in the Tychonic world system or the discussion on comets in Germany through the first presentation of a manuscript treatise by Michael Maestlin on the great comet of 1618.

Excerpt from The Expanse of Heaven: A Series of Essays on the Wonders of the Firmament On a time I dreamed, and my dream was on this wise. In a vast black space there appeared a glowing orb about three yards in diameter, as it seemed to me; but it was nearly a quarter of a mile away from me, and its real nature I could not perceive. It shone with a mighty light, whiter than the driven snow, and more intense than the light from the heart of the fiercest furnace. Close by me I perceived a tiny globe, about an inch in diameter, travelling slowly along, and turning round and round as it travelled. Excerpt from In the High Heavens The present volume contains a series of sketches of certain parts of astronomy which are now attracting a great deal of attention. I may specially mention among the novel parts of the book Chapters XIII. And XIV., relating to Meteorites. The last chapter, On the Constitution of Gases, discusses points which seem destined to be of great importance in astronomy, while the first chapter studies, in a new light, the great question of the movement of our system. Excerpt from The Wonders of the Heavens Of all the sciences, Astronomy is the one which can enlighten us best on our relative value, and make us understand the relation which connects the Earth with the rest of creation. Without it, as the history of past centuries testifies, it is im ssible for us to know where we are or w c we are, or to establish an instructive comparison between the lace which we occupy in space and the who e of the universe without it we should be both ignorant of the actual extent of our country, its nature. And the order to which it belongs. Inclosed in the dark meshes of ignorance, we cannot form the slightest idea of the general arrangement of the world a thick fog covers 'the narrow horizon which contains us, and our mind remains incapable of soaring above the daily theatre of life, and of going beyond the narrow sphere traced by the limits of the action of our senses. On the other hand, when the torch of the Science of the Worlds enlightens us, the scene changes. The vapors which darkened the horizon fade away, our mistaken eyes contemplate in the serenity of a pure sky the immense work of the Creator. The Earth appears like a globe poised under our steps thousands of similar globes are rocked in ether; the world enlarges in proportion as the power of our examination increases, and from that time universal creation develops itself before us in its reality, establishing both our rank and our relation with the numerous similar worlds which constitute the universe.
